London, August 20.- The steamer Hope, commanded by Sir Allen Young, which left here in June last in search of the crew of the steamier tire, has arriv• ed at Peterhead with the entire crew of that vessel. The Hope picked them up in MatoWtkin Straits, Nova Zembla, on 3rd August, they having loot their ship off Franz Josef Land and jurneyed in boats to the straits through the ice. Leigh Smith, nomtnander of the Eire, Expedition, gives the following account ..f its experience: -On July 13, 1881, we steamed through packice, and ten days Later sighted Franz Josef Lsnd. We proceeded towards Cape Ludlow, whieh was c:(se to a pack to the northward. ou Au,,. 21, 1881, we went up Night - 'wale Sound and thence to Eire harbor, and erected the storehouse. On the 1(ith ee started east to look for the Jeannette, tut were unable to pass Berentzhnok. On August 21st the Eira got blocked be- tween a land floe and pack of ice, a mile east of Cape Flora, and sank before we were unable to save many stores. We built a hut on Cape Flora, of turf and stones, and covered it with sails. We wintered there, and during the whole time no signs of scurvy appeared. Twenty-nine walrus and thirty-six bears were killed end eaten. We left Cape Flora on June 4, 1882, in four boats; po sailed 80 miles without seeing any ice; harniless and got about loose. "Ate all reached Nova Zembla, Aug. 2nd. when Canadian, mayors harmless? the Eire was nipped, the leak gained so rapidly that two hours after it was dis- envered it was neeesaary to abandoned the ship. Hardly had the last man left the vessel when the ice eased and the Eire rapidly sunk. A tent was first erected on the ice, and a house subse- quently built. All the bits of the Eire were sued. Most of the men saved some clothes and bedding. For sixteen nights the men slept in a tent, from which they were at times almost floated out by rain. a■ aeceasirWeed t.v.e. The fallowing is from a Van Dieutue's L nd paper: -Last week, a damsel was brought to the pollee Dike, charged with putting one Mrs. Norah Mulligan in bodily fear. Prisoner pleaded guilty, but begge1 that the o'fonce might be passed over, u she had rt. eived an offer of marriage from a wentlatuan, who in all probability would turn her off were she to be puwshed and he to due iier her disgrace. To prove her veracity, she produced the following epistle from the enamored swain, which we strongly re- commend to the perusal of those who protract their marriage s by long; and tedious courtship: "My dear Angel, this conies with a pound of sausages, which t hope will find you in good health se it leaves me at present. I seen you lut Sunday for the first time. Since then I haven't had no peace for thinking of your dear self; I therefore will take it as a granted favor if you will marry me as early as possible, as I can earn by my profession an excel- lent livehood. The resident replied that the city was regularly inoorp,ra:ed, and had a mayor as its chief magistrate. " And des the Mayor wear the insignia of his office?" asked the Britisher. New York, Aug. 21. --The World's cable despatch says: Ceteweyo, the ex - k ing of Zululand, is the lion of the hour, though the powers that to at the colonial office only allow him to roar very mild- ly. He is, I hear, much pleased with the conditions of his partial restoration to his kingdom, a Bri'.ish resident being appointed at his capital as • political dry nurse. He leaves England in about three weeks from now. The dusky war - nor, or to quote Lord Salisbury, the "bloodthirsty savage," will doubtless be glad to doff his European "togs" for the more airy and primitive costume of his native land. The general opinion among those who know anything about the sub- ect seems to be that when once he is at hone he will do his utmost to make things pleasant for Chief John Dunn, who has been taking on airs in his ab- sence. The Zulu king's domestic habits, as reported in the papers, are scarcely worth imitating. He hu a huge appe- tite and devours great quantities of beef for choice, washed down by raw whis- key. He prefers fingers to forks and the woolly head of his prime minister provides him with the modern refine- ment of the napkin. I may say th.it his portrait (by Leslie Ward) is to appear shortly in Vanity Fair. cedertsr Markus.
