Neptune, Aug. 14 -There has been a
definite decision to make a vigorous le-
gal protest against the election of Sir
John A. Macdonald fur Limnos, and on
fisturdry last the necessary legal papers
wit., served oa him rano ially at River
Du Loupe, where he is now recruiting
for sorue weeks. Evidence has beencol-
lected, and it is now asserted that it can
be clearly proved, that the must shame-
ful a.ts of bribery were resorted to in
order to avert defeat. The facts are
most damaging, both to Sir John per-
sonalty, and to some of his leading sup-
porters in this county and elsewhere.
The case is in the hands of Messrs. Der -
oche S Madden, of Napanee, assisted
by Mr. Bethune, Q. C., of Toronto.
They are wisely keeping very quiet
about the evidence already in their pea
semil.n, but in due time some refreshing
views of Tory arguments and persuasions
will be published.

Canada has at least one champion in
the English press. On Tuesday evening
the Jane.. (Gazette took up the cudgels
on behalf of the Dominion, and very se-
verely attacked the leading article in
which the Time.4 a few days ago dealt
with the {„4tition of the Canadian Parlia-
ment respecting the release of the Irish
suspects. I must confess I was glad to
sec this rather unusual sight, for as a
rule whet the pnatics or ,finances of
Canada are attacked by any of the Eng-
lish japers, nothing in the shape of a
reply is forthcoming in any influential
organ of opinion, and as a consequence
judgment goes by default against Cana-
da. 1)f course the Sl. Janne. Re:,tte does
not conte forward merely from a d sin-
serested desire to get the Canadian posi-
tion in the matter clearly before the pub-
lic. It is anxious to take advantage of
the opportunity to give vent to a start at
the Government, while especially con-
demning the Time.. Still. whatever its
motive, it makes one or two very good
points on behalf of the Dominion. The
tierce t r ads in which the leading journal
indulged, it says, would be mischievous
in tl.e Colonies if they hal not long ago
taken the measure of the Times' influ-
ence, and goes on to give in outline the
effective retort which • patriotic Cana-
dian might make. It imagines him to
ask :— What is this sin that we have
