They tarry .petit] tanks fur preserving
these c .11ection., and believe that there
tanks are the means of bringing maxi luck
to a craft. The old belief in lucky and
unlucky wising days is said to be dyiug
out among the Glut.c -titer Bahamian, a
fact said t.• be due, iu degree at least,
to the sharp ootr.petiti.,u that has sprung
up. It is trot au unusual sight when a
tine Fraley eomes after • spell of bad
weather, u. see • Large fleet spread sail
and depart fur the fishing grounds. A
belief in "Jonals" pr. its among fisher-
men. A Jonah may be sotwnthing ani-
mate or inanimate, or even the result of
the sections or sooldeats •d persons ; in
fact, almost everything that is supposed
to bring ill luck is called • Juush. A
vessel regarded as unfortunate is thus
said tc be a Jonah ; it is often difficult to
obtain a crew of good men for her, if men
are scarce, although she may be well
adapted for the business.. Equal tmubie
is also a ,metimes experienced by expert
fishermen in securing a berth aboard •
vessel, beo•use they have the reputation
of being Jonahs. It ..ocasiotally hap-
pens that some reseals meet with ill for-
tune for years in succession, and, under
Ruch circumstances, that evidence of their
being Jonah' is as strong as proofs of
holy writ. A singular circumstance of
this kind is recalled. Several years ago
a new vessel was brought to Gloucester
from the port where she wan built: She
was of the largest class employed iu the
fisheries—a beauty in model and rig—
and the skipper, who wax • young man
sod hart owner, felt * c•immendable
pride in his tiue achenaer. One day,
however, an acquaintance of the Captain
mid to him while the vessel was being
fitted for her tint trip :--"1'm sorry you
have had that vessel built." When ask-
ed fir" his reasons he continue 1 ;—"I
have known the man who built her to
launch more than .20 schooner. during
the past few years and none of them ever
made a dollar for their owners, while few
if them live more than moor three years
being either wrecked on the shore or
foundered at sea. Strange to say, the
tint Captain who sailed in this schooner
had no luck for 19 months, although he
had previously been fortunate and felt a
pride ir. his business. Finally, becoming
disgusted•a.id somewhat disheartened, he
sold out his share of the vessel and left
her, almost convinced that what had
been told him by his friend was not far
from the truth. • The schooner (not yet
two years old) was lost at sea on her
next voyage. The Captain and two of
the crew were drowned, and the survivor,
after enduring much suffering while lash-
ed to the wreck, were finally taken off
and returned home. This schooner was
continually meeting with ill fortune from
the day she first sailed out of Gloucester
harbor to the time of her wreck. The
belief in Jonahs fortunately often meets
with a rebuff so severe as to hinder it
from becoming anything like a general
one. One skipper once inquired of are
other, nodding his head in the direction
of a man who was at work .•n the vessel:
"Are you going to carry that man 1" Re-
ceiving All affirmative reply, he continu-
ed : "You won't get any fish, then. He
was a regular Jonah." The reply was :
"Jonah nor uo Jonah,he goes this trip any
way." The trip in question proved a
successful one, and nothing more was
heard of the man being a Jonah.

In regard to this Province, it inay
well he that Sir .Rohn 'Macdonald much
regrets same of the steps which he took
t.. ensure success. He wo.u:d hate 11,441
a sufficient majority without the ' ;errv-
niandering Bill, and the appointutent of,
in many cases doubtless, the nominees
of the Conservative candidates :ec Re-
turning Officers. Curious stories are
told of the conduct of many of the de-
puties appointed by these. Already
three duly elected members have beta
counted out, and another was very near
ly being so, for the fault of the deputies
appointed by these partizan Returning
Officers, unused to their duties. It is
also said that Mr. Blake w1ould have been
counted out if his real majority had not
been nearly two hundred, as tient re-
ported., It may be that a [•rel Heal of
this was accidental, but when it is re-
membered that there has not been this
trouble in previous elections, when re-
sponsible officials were Returning
Officers, it looks suspicious. One thing
to be much regretted also is that the
chief organ of the Conservative party in
this Province eagerly welcomed Mr.
Hawkins as member for Bothwell, until
the matter can be set right, by the grace
of the Returning Officer, and was an
eager to welcome Mr. Plumb's entrance
into Parliament in ft similar manner.
it cannot speak for its party in this, and
the sooner it adopts a more honest policy
the better for it and for its party.
Another election is coming on at no dis-
tant day, and these things will not be
forgotten, and will not aid the Conser-
vative party in the Provincial struggle.
