hardship, saooteded in reaching the
shrew ide subsequently tame here and
told tbs mase story,'whieb some of our
resdsn may remember. The vessel and
oargs were heavily insured, but no one
doubted the story of John Waddel, and
in oeutes of time the losses were paid,
amounting to four or five thousand dol -
len.
In the spr•ang of 1868 Nr Waddel
moved with his family to Goderich, and
for two years was noticed to make fre-
.qua t trips to the north shore in • small
boaty aoaompanied by his s.. a
lid a twelve years of age.
At last vague tumors were set afloat
t., the elect that Waddel had sunk the

utile' had held the office o f •!teed[ of
ti .-nunty for several years, after-
.• J. resigning to ran for parliament,
stood so high in the public estima-
t.ou that no exaasination was made.
In the year 1870, while 00 one of
these voyages with his son, the boat cap-
sized near' Pine Point, a place about
twenty miles above Goderich, and John
Waddel was drowned. The same waves
that took him to the bottom served to
wash ashore his little son, and subee-
queatly the lifeless body of the father.
The remain were taken to Goderich,
and interred in the city cemetcry.
Some five or six yeas Ocoee, a isher-
man, while entering Tuber Murray har-
bor, at Cape Hurd, when the water was
unusually clear, disoovered a awaken
schooner in about one hundred feet of
water, which at the time was thought to
be the Explorer, but Waddel being dead
no steps were taken to unravel the mys-
bt)tri two weeks since Captwio H. N. 'When tomatoes were first discovered
lex of this city, commenced the raising
of the unknown schooner with the steam to be an article of food nobody would
badge Victoria. After ten days hard la- eat them. People kept thein at arms

cess, and, as suspected, the vessel proved
to be the Explorer.
The Teasel had been stripped of her
canvas and all her (ergo taken oat,
while about fifteen tons of stone had
been put on board. Twelve inch -and -a -
half augur holes were found in the
centre board box close to the keel, The
doors of the cabin were found to be se-
curely locked, and the body of one of
the sailors, Covered with moos,, was
found in the cabin, a skylight of which
had been broken in some way; and it is
supposed the other body floated i out.
It is now thought that Waddel sunk

Wheat wan almost panicky on 'Change

sides to the tremendous crop of wheat
that has bisect harvested. Thousands of
bushels are being crowded to market
while prices are high. The receipts of

In sum up, we may conclnde that,
with favorable weather up to and
through harvest, the all-around agricul-
tural traduce of England will be larger
than it has been in three out of the last
four years, but that it is now too late in
the se art for any imaginable weather
to bring us a great harvest. Sootland,
where oats to s great extent replaoe the
wheat grown in this country, will be
better off for that reason: though if po-
tato disease becomes as widely prevalent
as people fear it must be, the advantage
will be counterbalanced. From Ireland,
as during recent seasons, reports are
more favorable than those from Eng-
land or Scotland; but in this ease the
unknown quantity of potato disease is of
the etreoet importance.—[Pall Mall Gaz-

doctors are always finding oat something
to make people feel uncomfortable. Not
satisfied with discovering that the toma-

g.,ne to work and discovered that the
strawberry is injurious to the human
system, on account of the seeds, which
penetrate the vitals. It would he a

With the death of the assassinated
president's widow a very amiable lady
has passed away. Probably no woman
in America today—with the exception
of Mrs. t;arfeld perhaps—has gone
through the same vtcisistudes as Mrs.
Lincoln. Ever since her husband's cruel
tnurder in 186th she has been a constant
invalid and has spent much of the time
abroad. Several years of this tune was

gress has not been over liberal with Mrs.
Lincoln's wants in the shops of pensions.
She has spent much of her latter days
