ROAD OOPEIDAS1un3P. M IMPORT.
That, as instructed by the last, Councilwent to
its muting in January
examine the bridge referred to in item
86 of the minutes, sad found that the
bridge is over s creek in a deep and nar-
row gully, and is in freshets liable to
have s veryheavy rush of water through
it; the bre is 14e feet span and 3 feet
high, and in a Abid it 18 Oftentimes
choked up with water, and consequently
the water finds an outlet over the em-
bankment at the north end of the
bridge, and washes it away sometimes
as touch as sixty-three feet. 1 would
suggest that the badge be made 6 or 8
feet more of a spat, and 2 feet higher,
which I believe woekt allow any flood
there to pass safely. I entrained the
bridge ever the Eighteen Mile river on
the Ashfield road, and find that a will
require anew floor and some slight re-
peal.' to :the ;approaches and hand rail-
ing. The Graham's bridge on the Lake
Shorn Road, will require to have some
repairs to the approaches. The ap-
proaches to Help's Bridge will need some
slight repair, and the planking is torn off
two of the piers with the ice. I would
take the liberty to, suggest that it might
be well to have a plate of iron put over
the point of the cutwater, so as to save
this planking from being torn otf yearly.
In connection with the affairs ofthe
Maitland bridge, I have iuuch 'pleasure
in stating to tt•e t`emp'i that I have
been a11 ;,-*,. i t•. :o: `.Darden and

taking.
troubles incidental to so large
taking. I have further to state that as
authorized by the Warden's Committee,
1 superintended the finding and making
of a safe fording place across the river
while the traffic is stopped across the
bridge by taking away the old ttridge
and erecting the now one. Considera-
ble time and labor for thapurpose ef the was
spent, as the early season
tirade it more difficult. Thel dam
for
Mr. Platt's new trill was pertly
move and dower, which was a difficult
work, the water being cold and deep,
o find men who
and it
would work as difficult tunder such coed -
tions. At the fording place there were
a number of heavy boulders in the bed
of the ,tream which had to be removed
at a depth of not less titan four feet of
water, and deep holes in the bottom to
to filled with graveL After all this had
been done the appr.,athes on both sides
of the river required to be' cut away in

isome safe and convenient led in others ea we c .old fur
teams and light vehicles, and :titer all
tteit wars completed, a temporary foot-
bridge, which should be safe, had
to be made, so u to allow foot travellers
to get acmes. The carious items of ex-
pense for the above works cost the
moderate sum of $87.37, the account for
which will be laid before you. I have
also to say that some of the timber sup-
plied for the erection of the new bbridge
e
was lost in the ice and had to be replac-
ed, which was done, amounting to a
little over 2000 feet. I have 'acceded
in obtaining all the cedar for the flooring
joists inlocal mills, which it was feared we
would scarcely be sble to obtain, and
which is nearly all delivered that
hes
ground. 1 have also to say
the concurrence of the Warden's com-
mittee, I engaged Mr. Sands to super-
intend and inspect the treason work, all
the time that it was being laid in posi-
tion on the piers and abntments. I can-
not conclude my report without stating
to the Council that Mr. Lochtnan, the
superintendent of the work for the Iron
Budge Company, has rendered us very
able advice and efficient assistance in all
or any of the little d►fficttltiea where re
t are
sure to occur, and do occur,
many contractors are carrying On each
his own oontreat sidlultaneously on the
one work, and I believe that it is a
good guarantee that the work will be
satisfactorily finished, es he thoroughly
understands the whole work.
All of which is respectfully submitted,
CHAS. OIRVis, Road
