Dominion DAY. -The very efficient
committee appointed to arrange for the
grand celebration of Dominion Day in
Goderich, is going about the business in
good style. Already about $400 have
been subscribed, and the list of events is
large and popular. All the games and
sports can be witnessed by spectators
free. The athletic games will take place
on the public square. The proceedings
of the day will consist of a Kalithumpiau
precession, firemen's parade, Oddfel-
lows' parade, regatta, running, jumping
and vaulting, bicyle races, and at even-
ing a grand display of fireworks. The
whole affair promises to be TMS celebra-

Rev. Father Watters returned fmm his
sad visit to Quebec in time to celebrate
the grand feast of Corpus Christi on
Sunday last. A very beautiful feature
in the service was the process m after
mass, being formed of 22 little girls
beautifully dressed in white, wearing
boquet of flowers in their hands and the
12 acolytes appropriately dresse:i. Four
of the little girls Mirtsea Florence Doyle,
Josie Shannon, Minnie Higgins, and
Flora McIntosh, proceeded the priest
and strewed flowers upon his peth as he
carried the Adorable Host in his hand
through and around the church, the
choir singing the Latin hymn, " Pange
Lingua." Tbe choir sang well under
the leadership of the organist, Maim
Cooke. Father Wetter' spoke touching-
ly of the solemnity of the feast, and
begged his congregotion to be earnest
ond sincere, and be as eager to serve
their God as they ere to seek worldly ad-
vancement.

the present tariff giving him protection,
while the duty is continued on ooal and

tilt eAntiACE inane.
Me. MOSS'S CttlaswAn, of the firm of
Morton i Creasman, speke pretty plain-
ly on the injprioui effects of the Tilley
tariff on the eatrlige trade.
"I would rather have the old tariff,"
said he. "We have really.no protection
at all. The duty on some classes of
goads we have to import is as high as 35
per cent, end the dety.on American
buggies is 25 per Dent. It hasn't helped
us any. I would hko to sae coal, iron
and raw material generally, free. The
tariff hasn't helped us in the least, and
trade is dul er.'
STORY Bion. , successors to John
Knox were also seen. like Morton az
Creasman, both these pushing young car-
riage builders are deed against the pre-
sent tariff. In the course of a conversa-
tion the following facts were elieited:
"The carriage business has flattened
out since 1878. Two wood workers can
easily do all the business in town now.
We have to pay mot$lor our trimmings
and mountings. It is strange that now
there is little or no demand for first class
work. Irwe want to get up a really tip-
top rig, we must import the greater part
of the material. The duty on such stuff
mere that balances any advantage we get
from American vehicles being kept nut.
The carriage business of Huron has nut
been helped, but rather injured, by the
new tan We will support any move
in the direction of throwing off the duty
on raw material."
i R flit. Eft.
Me. AJAX SAUNDsas, of the firm of
James Saunders & Son, informs us that
since the tariff was increased in 1879,
the price of stoves has advanced to 30
per cent. Said he:
"They first raised the price 15 per
cent, and have since increased it to 30
per cent. A stove costing say $23 un-
der the old tariff, now costa about $30;
and a $32 stove $40. Castings have in-
creased over 50 per cent. in price; from
5c to 8c a lb. You can tell the people
that they have to pay the extra duty on
.1l these manufactured quoit. Our
price lists can prove all I've said."
Lit every man who has bought a stove
during the past year or two, reckon
how much has been stolen from him
by act of parliament in the (natter of
that very necessary article of house-
hold furniture.
■twain..
Mn. STPAUDEL, the well-known har-
nees-smsker says :
"The N. P.is not a benefit to
our business in this part of the
country, and our trade is quieter than it
was under the last Government. Our
hardware is much increased in cost, and
our profits are lea. than formerly. Ow-
ing to the exodus to the States and
Manitoba. journeymen are scarce and
wages high. I would like to see Blake
returned to power."
These witnesses are in our midst, and
speak f" -Aa experience. Not a single in-
dustrf in Goderich has been helped by
the tariff. But in nearly every line bus-
iness is drooping, money is scarce, or-
ders'bre few, and taxes on material high.
The party championed by Mr. Cameron
is in favor of free raw material.
