"Nu good will ever come of it, now
mind what I tell you ! The idea of a sa-
ber reslwotable scan of forty Merryiug •
obit of a girl like that! But it appear{
tsi me that the lenges. I live the
convinced 1 am that men are awful fools
when it comes to leve. It just appears
'to knock all the sense out of them that
they ever did have." And Mrs. Heer-
kiah Winters settled her spectacles firmly
on her nom., as though she mama they
should always stay there, and then jam-
med her needle energetically through
her sewing,
You see, Mn Hezeklah Winless esus
a prominent member of the sewing so-
ciety at L , and wu generally first
spokeswoman everywhere.
"I agree with you entirely," said Mrs.
Antony Evans, a meek -faced woman
who seldom had an opinion of her own,
but always agreed with somebody.
"And he being a minister, of the go.-
. psi, too," said Mrs. Sophrone Dodds.
"1 don't know what the world is Codl-
ing to, i am sure," said Mrs. Eden 3 : -
held; and there was a general a•_h of ilia
slatiandier from all the members of the
sewing eeciety.
"I know that the duty of erety mem-
ber of this society Ate convince that iuex
penenced child of her dutyssa minister's
wife; and I ant morally pure that some-
thing dreadful will happen to Ulnae chil-
dren tiles afore six mouths. To thick
of the way .he has started t ut .rlrealt

.l.sntha Wright teemed this remark like
a bombshell into their midst.

what the world was coming t,..
"Now, 1 don't think it hooks very well
to are the whole society awuop down on
nu l.erson like Imogene," interrupted
Mk. Arthur Wilton, who had out beau
a member of the sewing cin l • very long.
"\\'e had better wait until she is ,here
to defend herself," said Mrs, Henry Per-
seus, a meek second to Mrs, Wilton.
"I see plainly, Mrs Wilmot, that you
and Mrs. Parsons are taken by her silly,
childish ways. 11ut I formed my opin-
ion of her that Sunday when she laughed
right out in meeting just because a little
poodle -dog barked at the choir."
This awful evidence of the total de-
,orav'tty of the minister's new wife was
revealed by Mrs. Ile/mkt/di Winters.
"Almost everybody laugher'- at that,"
responded Mn. Parsons. "Anything
seems so touch funnier if jou hadn't
ought to laugh."
"And just to think what she said to
one," said the owner of the aforemention-
ed poodle. "Why, when I asked her to
join our society she said she had two lit-
tle heathens at home to sew for, and
that they took the most of 'her time; but
if we want to sew for the neglected chil-
dren living under the shadow of our Own
church spires, she would spare time to
help us. Just as if we wanted the lower
strata in our church!" And Miss Soph-
rona Dobbs sniffed the air disdainfully.
"Now this is enough fur one time,"in-
.terrupted 'Mrs. Wilton "Would that
ministers could have two wives, so that
we might divide the blame.
The ladies looked bewildered, and
some of then laughed a little; then they
launched into a discussion on the coming
pic-nic.
It was to be the regulation kind of a
pin nic, for the ladies and chipren only;
and they were to have such a nice time,
with haus sandwiches, l.reeied chicken,
and lemonade made "n the grounds, and
butts and mosquitoes ud in ieitum.
When the day of the pic-nie arrived,
Mrs. Merton, the much talked -of Minis-
ter's wife, went. People had said that
they "didn't re:•kou Merton aould go, as
the church was at the bottom of it,- and
when they naw her there, they said "it
was 'ust like het to go to every pic-nie.'
Neve-theless, the church people at
1. - were like church people every-
where --they acid a gonat deal that they
didn't mean, and with a kw exceptions
blue-eyed, fair faced Mrs Merton was
cordially treated, and her friends when
she made them, wile very true to her,
anti always defended her when she ran
the gauntlet of society's tongue.
The picnic seemed a suceees generally,
everybody was having "such a splendid
time," and the m.s►tiurt,.es bad voted pic-
nics a ifeautiful invention, r.nd were
singing : ntbenu of praise at the pros-
pect of a "Koa.tl square meal, when sud-
den'y there was a splash and suffocated
:ries, and tau little urns dteappea►ed
under the gliding surface of the stream
that wound like a huge serpent through
the *voter.
There were shrill seroma of ge. fns
terror, and white faces stated a' the rash
of waters in agony sa the awful peril of
the children s•eeemd to paralyse Wean.
Mrs. Evan., whose little dark haired boy
had loosened the canoe from its fastening
to take Vinnie Merton for s ride, and
bad while rocking it nicked too far, sod
tipped at over, was now, while her troy
was almost dtswwniwa, !yin` in a helpless
heap on the bask of the river. Some
woes beginning to recover there self -pos-

Mra Merton, stepping out of her slip-
, poised herself , meegnt oe the
then the 'leader bowie am& ui a

blue ribbons, dropped like as arrow into
Om water, and struck out *eh the move

was battling with the current, and hold-
ing him so that hia head was above water
swam easily to shore, where many heeds
lifted him to the bast; and then swim-
ming back to her rebellious little step
daughter, aha carried her, calf suffocated
with the waves, bask to terra firma.
Vilma., by general advice from with-
out, had managed to keep an almost con -
tine' warfare at home, although she was
naturally a generous -hearted child; but
when she had recovered from her fright,
and made sure she had not swallowed all
the water in the river, she looked at her
step -mother's wiled garments and said,
slowly:
"If you demi care, Mrs. Merton, I'll
call yon mamma, now."
After that day, Mrs. Merton had
many friends; for you can always reach a
mother's heart through her children, and
every woman seems a mother to any
child in the hour of danger.
"She was brave and self-posaessed,aud
she saved my Elmer, and 1 don't mean
to say-inother word against her, if she
never goes with the church." That was
whin' Mrs. Evans said at the next meet-
ing, and es oho seldom expreeed an up -
inion for herself, the ladies for the most
!,art agreed with her. except Mrs. Hez-
cai:dt Winters, ache, said:
"Wef, I duns..; she may be :dl right;
but it woman that ounld entrap a roan of
forty, and he a minister, kind of looks
to me as though ahe was a Hirt."
And Miss $ophrona Dobbs nodded her
false frizzes emphatically as ell. said :
"I agree with you, Mrs. \Timers. \Ve
mustn't all be taken in by one go•,d
act.
Well, to tell the :cuth, fork did,. gen-
erally apeakeig, keep as eye on her; but
everything seemed satisfactory. Sl:o
did nothing that scandalized their ideas
of propriety, and they had aihnost ut.tde
up their minds that with proper advice
she might do for a minister's wife after
all.
But the town of L was visited
one day by a travelling theatre troupe,
and everybody was going alio wasn't a
pillar iri the church, an1"aa ildn't en-
courage no such u►,,itution of Satan-"
Mrs. Winters was especially bitter
against them. The theatre, long ago,
had led her one sou from his home, and
the only sweet, sacred spot in Mrs, Win-
ters' hard religious life was her love fcr
her boy -her baby, as she called him,
although lie was almost a wean when he
went away.
The day the troupe arrived, Jlra. Win-
ters was at horns alone, and the faint
sound of distant music was, arousing to
utterance the grief she had kept buried
so long.
"Ill just gots the sewing circle and for-
get my sorrow by listening to something
or other." And away trudged Mrs.
Winters to Mrs. Richfield's, whose turn
it was to entertain the society.
Everybody was busy and gossippy,
and Mrs. Winters was listening to the
report of the bad behaviour of the girl
of the period, when Miss Araminth*
White came busting in.
"La, ane ! ladies, have you heard ?"
and without waiting for an answr" she
continued: "Oh, the dreadful actions ..f
Imogene Merton ! Sarah Halcomb,,that
lives next door, seen it with her own
eyes, and she t• d me all about. And
poor, dear Mr. A •n on away on church
business !"
"What is it t" "Do tell !' "Go on,
Aramintha, and explain," were the words
from all sides.
"Well, to begin with, any feelings is
awfully rile(' up; but you all know that
them theatre fellerscame to -day. Well,
one of teem -(h know he was one, be-
cause he gut off the train with them) -
come to Mrs. Merton's to -day, and she
was a sett in' in that room of hers with
them windows that swinge out; and he,
instead of going to the front door and
ringing the bell like a nun -why, when
he saw her a sittin' in the room, with
her back to the window, he jest slipped
up, sly and aneakin' like, and stepped in
through the window and then jumped
clear across the room, and such huggin'
and kiesin' was never seen in a minis-
ter's house afore : Now, ladies, I know
this is so, because Sarah Halcomb told
'it for a eolen.n truth, and that ain't
the went of it. After he had stayed an
hour or so, he went W the hotel and got
another feller, and them two walked
straight to the minister's holes, and she
teemed the doer, Axed up M to kill.
Now, I my it is the duty ed every mem-
ber of this society to look into this mat-
ter. The minister is one, and we have
got the reapestabitity of the church to
sustain. Ws should go immediately ani
hear what that dreadful creature has to
say for herself."

It was a solemn -•senor. ,tr tip that
Hied into the minister'. `sitting -room.
Mrs. Hesekish wss to be the chief
spokeswoman, as she generally was on
all church occasions. ora Merton
greeted thein, her face all smiles.
"1 had just sent ter yule, a.

lady's withered cheek, while Miss S o
phronia Dobbs mattered "Judas !" un-
der breath.
"Just come right in here, while 1 talk
to the ladies. And Mrs. Wiettlts fol-
lowed, her face white with indignation.
Suddenly there was a strange, glad cry
from the wrathy lady, and in answer to
to words, "Eddie, my boy !" some one
said "Mother 1" and then Mrs. Merton
went back to explain 'fatten to the
astonished ladies.
"My brother came today, and ui his
travelling he came by chance upon Ed-
gar Wiuters. Edgar is travelling with
the theatre troupe that le here, and they
beiug frcende, Luke brought Edgar
here, end I sent for Mrs. Winters; but
she came before my note reached
hue."•
The ladies now bgan to feel ashamed,
but they were generous. Mrs Aramin-
the said :
"If I'm the bearer of scandal again, it
shan't be about you, Mn. Merton."
All hardness seemed melted out of
Mrs.. Winters' nature as she returned to
the sitting -room.
"I waist yogi to forgive me if y,.0 stn,•
Mrs. Merton. I came here today to de-
nounce you, and on circumstantial evi-
dence only; but 1'11 be your friend in the
future, remember that." The ladies bJ

so much.
