he escaped from his quarters at Luck -

pursued by a throng of excited men.
He was stopped by Mr. S. C. Haven,
who perceiving the animal, galloped
down the road, rushed frum the field in
which he was plowing, ' and seizing e►
stick, turned him. The brute made a
dash at Hagen with open. mouth, but the
latter stood his ground, and chased him
back, when he was driven into Mr.

LRt-rvRt.-The entertainment in the
Temperance Hall on Tuesday ovening.
was well attended. A quartette sang
several pieces during the evening, Miss
Macdonald, .f Dunlop, presiding at the
organ In a way which drew forth favora-
ble comment. The "DalaclavaCharge," 1
was well rendered by Mr. A. H. Clut-
ton; we hope, now that he has broken 1
the ice, to hear him recite often at open
meetings. The readings by Mears. J.
G. Clutton and S. P. Williams were t
well appreciated. This ended the first
part, which was followed by Mr. G. N.
McDonald, of Goderich, on "Courage."
The speaker pointed out that in order to
win in the battle of life, courage should
not be wanting. . He cited, various in-
stances of the irresistable power of
courage, and gave evidence of wide read-
ing :rad patient thought. A hearty vote
of thanks was tendered te Mr. Mo -
Donald at the cloae of the lecture, and
we hope to hear from hint again. A
reading, "Nance and Donald,' by John
Hall, had a bad effect on several bache-
lors present, driving for the nonce all
thoughts of matrimony out (of their
minds; but it convulsed the audience
with laughter. "Granny's Old Arm-
chair,'' by Mr. J. Linklater, was greet-
ed with loud applause. In the enurse of
a nti.nth, the lodge will give another en-
tertainment.
Paul Cleave, that t •venty trues he plant-

small accounts of $2 each to be paid --
one to the Auditor, the utiles fur a lad-
der required for the hall, adjourned till
the first Monday of May, that is, the 1st
of May.
"Currrau O1T."- -On Sunday morning
last, a ieoculiar proceeding took place
bore. It seeuta that n man named
Dresser of this village had been instruct-
ed by one Dobson, of Saugeen, to build
a fishing boat, under certain conditions.
Dotson it ill claimed by Dresser, failed
to carry out his part of the contract, and
the latter eurlsequeutly did nut build the
teat for him. But another boat was
built by Dresser, and Dobson, who had
advanced some money on the building
of the boat for him, came to Bayfield
last week. In the meantime Mr. Mai ks
of this place, in connection with Ikol•son,
took out an attachment on the built boat
and fearing that it might be run out of
the harbor on Saturday, hired the con-
stable and some other to watch it.
About four o'clock on Sunday morning,
the watchers, thinking that matters were
safe, chained up the boat to the wharf,
locked the chain with the constable's
handcuffs, and retired to rest. Dresser
was duly notified of their w ithdrawal,
and it is believed with the assistance of
friends, loosed the fastenings of the
boat, and took her out of the harbor,
chains, handcuffs and all. Ats.ut six
o'clock the boat was seen about tour
miles out, where she was taken in tow
by the fishing tug Dispatch, and taken
toward the waters ..f Uncle Sant. The
following despatch was published in the

PARNELL OUT.
aeleawd ea Parole for Owe week,
Mr. 'Parnell's release was not at first
understood to be on parole, and tele-
grams were sent to all parts of Ireland
announcing.that the release was uncon-
ditional. The result was that the
rejoicings were general, and preparations
were made for illuminations and torch-
light processions. When the true state
of affair became known, bitter disap-,
pointntent prevailed. and a strong feel -
tug sprung tip in several places, giving
rise to apprehension among the local
authorities. The announcement that
Mr. Parnell left for England without
seeing a single friend allayed the public
feeling. The Dublin evenin; toapers
i contained leaders expressing their in-
tense satisfaction at the release of the
