It is to be regretted that eounomy is nut fashionable in America. A s a proof that it is an unfashionable and even a despised virtue, relegated by the rush to the supped exclusive use of the pour, who ever hears an American wume& in fashionable life, at lot, utter the words "i cannot afford it?" In reality waste only is vulgar, economy is eminently res- pectable and in good taste. Unfortun- ately, however, thew who practise econ- omy hide it with as much care as if it was a crime, or something to be n•hatu- ed of, while waste, which should be con- sidered the distinguishing mark of the ignorant sad the stupid, takes first rank with es as the heritage of the "finest people." Happily the "finest" are not the "best people," and the best people always know how to economise, how to use their mons, whether large or small, w such sway as to make them go as far as possibe. The most perfect lady, the beet bred woman, whether her mew be large or small, is she who knows in all things, but especially in the ,natter of dress. how to expend her mo- ney to the beet advantage. To dress well, a woman must give a oertain por- tion of her time and some conscientious thought to the subject. To help these whose insane are limited to • dearer un- derstanding of the capabilities of their position, w that they may intelligently eoououtue their re.ourose, we will gip them wine hints drawn from the expor- ienoes of those who have made it a cow soientous study. The best material/ for a "best gown," while of necessity lying within oertain limits, are sufficient to choose from. Suppose it to be of black velvetor plush. it would last with core for five or six years. If of white or cream cashmere or Chudda cloth, it could be made to do duty, with a .triety of ribbons and Laces, fur three lessons, and then be utilized by dyeing and turned into a wslkiug dress for two seasons more. Black satin de Lyon or satin merveil- leuse, and plain black silk of good qual- ity are excellent materials for such a drew when velvet cannot be afforded and cashmere is not preferred.
