Nov. 24th, 1881.
DEAR Bao, -You have asked me to
;five you a general acccount of how I
have got on during the summer, what
kind of weather we have had and are
now having, and how those who went out
with me are doing, and how we all like
the country.
In doing this, it will be necessary to
tell you a little in detail of my work
during the summer. My wife and 1 ar-
rived here on the 23rd of July, and
dnring my absence the boys had broken
no leas than 170 acres. I had intended
to have 200 broken, but on account of
the, hurning ()flay stable and the lose of
my best teals, it fell 30 acres short of
our speculations. However, I felt very
well se.: laded that so much had been
done. As soon as • 1 got out v: a com-
menced putting up hay, and sucue.•dod
in curing about (10 taus. \Vhen that was
• done the harvest was ready. We cut
40 acres of wheat avid 10 acres of oats
We had very toad harvest weather. Just
after I had got it cut, cad in the stook,
we had a series of rains, do that in Order
to get the steam t'Irrlt•r^ h•e had to stack

thrashed we had 800 bushels of wheat,
;and 406 of oats, half of `which was my
share al, I had the land on snares. We
paid the steamer for tnreslling, 5 cents a
bushel for .wheat, and 3 cents for oats,
and provided grub and sleeping room for
the mon, and fuel for fire. It took,
about 19 then to attend the noachiiie, five
...f whom go with it. The rest yon have
to.'hiro, and pay $1:50 per day and
board. We also had teams to draw it 0)
market, eo that when theaast straw was
threshed we had only one load to take,
the. others having been drawn away as
fast aA it was threshed. This is the .way
all do, who are within a reasonable dis-
tance of the river. . The wh at 1 intend-
ed to keep for seed and bread, but as it
wasted itis very goal condition on ac-
count of the wet weather, I sold it at
once for 94c a bushel; had I kept it .for
three weeks I could have got $1.25, but
we'can't folsue•those things. - Atter lar-
. vest we at once went, to outjta eksetting.
In the meantime my sou Junes thought
•lie would like 40 go and mire suite money
at his trade duriug the fall and winter,
so I took his place at the 'plough. We
bad a big. task before us, 170 acres to

railroad construt.,ed about 8 miles want
of us, and mother is projected to run
along the river, touching at the town
on its bank; this one will be very these
us, and will raise the value of land very
much. Now to sutin up, the prospect of
myself and all those who came with me
are good, and our only regret u that
we did not come years ago to this or
some other part of the North-west, fur
while I speak thus, I mean Manitoba, as

think we are about far enough north. I
would certainly not 'advise a man with a

at least $1000, and then he would have
hard enough pinching for A few years.
