REMEMBER
(By sgsan Lamglois) •
Let there be peace on earth
and let it begin with me. This
was a very POpular song and it
has a very important meaning
to it just as Remembrance Day
does. Let there be peace, this
is the message.
Do you fight and argue? You
might think that you aren't caus-
ing very much trouble but World
,War I, started from one person
who killed another.
On June 28, 1914, crowds of
people gathered in Sarajevo,
capital of AuStrian province Bos-
nia, They came to see Arch-
duke Francis. Ferdinand, heir to
the throne, of Austria, Hungary.
Suddenly a man leaped from a
travelling car and fired a pistol.
The shots struck Francis Fer-
S
dinand and his wife. Both died
immediately. The assassin was
a young Dosman stodent who had
lived in Siberia,
AuStria-Ifungary suspected
that its neighbor Diberia had
planned a plot to kill Ferdinand.
As a result. Austria,Hungary de-
clared War on July g8, 1914.
A single act — the shooting,
of Ferdinand—marked the be-
ginning of World War I. Canada
entered the war the very first
,year. They went with the
British Empire. 55,000 Can-
adian soldiers died in the war to
save Canada.
After four long years an ar-
mistice ended the war which was
supposed to have ended all wars.
As John A. McOrae wrote in
his poem ,,To you from Jailing
hands we throw the torch; be
yours to keep it high."
Did we keep the torch high?
,•Nol for, 33 years after, World
;.war broke out.
World War II caused more
changes than any other war in
history.
Historians do not agree when
the war started. Some say it
started on Sept. 1, 1939, when
Germany invaded Poland.Others
say the war started when Japan
took over Manchuria on Sept. 18,
1931. Still others say World
War I and II were the same war
with only a breathing spell in-
between.
Again the war ended with an
armistice on Sept. 2, 1945.
Canada entered the war on
Sept. 10, 1939. They declared
war on Germany. This was the
first time that Canada had de-
clared war independently. Canada
lost many brave soldiers in the
war. That is why Canada is
still free to-day.
Today people like me find it
fairly hard to keep peace because
'all around us there are killings
and wars. I think that most of
us try to do our best at keeping
peace.
On Remembrance Day
remember the men who fought
for Canada. Be on good terms
with all people because a
killing and a dispute started
*World War I and I wouldn't want
to start World War III. Would
you?
I CARE
(By Gail White )
I care about. Remembrance Day,
While I'm at school cr outto play,
I care that soldiers went away,
So we could have our freedom
to-day.
I care about good things to eat,
A nice soft bed in which to sleep,
I care that soldiers laid on the
ground, .
AU hungry and awake from the
sound.
I care that we have such good
schools,
And we have all kinds of tools,
I care for those poor crippled
men,
Who can't as much as hold a pen.
I care .about Rqmembrance Day,
I care that poor souls had to pay,
I care about fun and play,
But most of all, Remembrance
Day.
