At a Directors' Meeting fol-
lowing the annual meeting of
Gay Lea Foods Co-operative
Ltd. held in Guelph last week,
Martin Baan, R,R.3, Walton, On-
tario, was re-elected President.
Mr. Baan has beep a director
of the co-operative since 1961
and is a large dairy farmer in
Huron County. He has been
active in farm and co-operative
organizations and is Past-Presi-
dent of the Ontario Co-operative
Development Association. He is
a member of the Huron County
Milk Committee.
Mel Proud, R.R. 2, Tara was
re-elected 1st Vice-President
and Walter Hamel, R.R.2, Elm-
wood was re-elected 2nd Vice-
President. Two new directors
were elected to the Board -
David Ireland of Teeswater and
Russell McCutcheon, Woodford.
Other directors include: Alex
Bell, Smiths Falls; George Suth-
erland, Chatsworth, Bert
Tuintjer, Laurel and Gerald O'-
Grady, Listowel.
Mr. Baan said that Gay Lea
Foods had enjoyed another good
year of operations with growth in
all areas of business. Building
of the new Toronto facilities at
100 Clayson Road, Weston, was
a major accomp lishment during.
the year. The new plant, located
on four acres of land, has 53,000
sq. ft. and houses the head of-
fice; warehousing and distribut-
ion formerly carried on at Oak
Street, Weston, as well as the
special product processing which
has been handled at Torbarrie
Road, Downsview.
The annual meeting approved
the Board of Directors' decision
to change the name of the organiz-
ation from United Dairy
Producers Co-operative Ltd. to
Gay Lea Foods Co-Operative Ltd.
The new name enhances the mar-
keting image and is more des-
criptive of operations as Gay
.Lea Foods moves further into
distribution of food products.
T. E. Brady; General Mana-
ger, announced a 22% increase
in sales volume to over 38 million
and net earnings of $311,000 com-
pared with $324,000 In 1971. Mr.
Brady said that out of earnings
the Directors had declared a
dividend of 814 per share on
common shares.

Scanning the Mitchell Advocate we note a report in
which Mr, and IVirs..lames Lealess of .Munro marked their
50th wedding anniversary recently when they met with their
family at the Legion Hall, Mitchell, where, a dinner was
served by the Legion Ladies' AUxiliarY. The KirktQn
Community Association has made the decision to make
$3,000 available on request to the new Kirkton-Woodham.
Community Centre Board towards their new community
centre project. Taking place at the same meeting was the
election of officers for the ensuing year. William waghorn
will serve as president, Dr. Norman Ames, Kirkton, vice-
President; secretary, Mrs. George Wilson, R.R.5, St.
Marys; treasurer T. A. Crag°, R.R,1, St. Marys.
The Teeswater News reports that. Mr. Fred Willie
was presented with gifts from management and Staff of
the Teeswater Creamery upon the completion of 31 years
of employment and his retirement. - - Mrs. Walter
Wraith of Teeswater celebrated her 50th birthday on
Monday, December 4th.
Three new faces, according to the Zurich Citizens
News, with one incumbent will form the Village Council
for the next two years . The new members are Fred
Haberer, Isidore• Leporte and Jack Turkheim. Herb
Turkheim, publisher of the Citizens News, was elected,
to the Huron County Board of Education and will represent
Hay Township, Hensall, Zurich and the north half of
Dashwood.
The Blyth Standard reports Blyth has a new reeve in
the person of Robbie Lawrie, a 27-year-old business man.
He defeated incumbent reeve George Bailie, 273 to 172. - - -
Mr. Robert Thompson was installed Worshipful Master of
Hullett Lodge A.F. and A.M, No. 268, Lonctesboro.
At Friday night's annual Huron County 4-H Achievement
awards the Robert McKinley Citizenship trophy went to
Beth Passmore of Usborne Township. - - - A 19-year-old
Strathroy youth suffered severe facial lacerations and it
is believed he may also have a broken arm and several ribs
as a result of a snowmobile accident. The youth ran into
a fence in Exeter, on Sanders Street, around 7;30 p.m.
and managed to get to a house where he collapsed on the
porch. He was taken to South Huron Hospital and later
transferred to Strathroy Hospital. - - - The Exeter area
fire board's new water tank truck has paid dividends for
a second time. Backed by an ample supply of water, the
firemen battled a blaze for four hours on the farm of Oscar
Tuckey to bring it under control. The fire apparently started
around a diesel tractor being used to dry 6,000 bushels of
corn in the huge barn. The Tuckey farm Is one mile north
of Exeter on Highway 4. Mr. Jack Prance, Exeter, marked
his 95th birthday recently. More than 70 members of
his family joined in on a celebration at the Community
Centre in Crediton. - - - One of the top winners during
the 1972 season of the Lucan Homing Pigeon Club was Norm
Hard yr - - The new Royal Bank of Canada was officially
opened Friday morning by Mayor Jack Delbridge, Morrie
Morrison, Royal's assistant general Manager for Ontario;
local manager, Roger Dowker, Sheila Miller and Janice
Brock, bank staff.
The Clinton News-Record reports that the formal
beginning of the Sarah Hale Chapter.of the Imperial Order
Daughters of the Empire, was held recently when the
Charter was presented to the Regent of the Chapter,
Mrs. R. W. Flowers. Mrs. E. F MacKay, Provincial
President from Hamilton, Mrs. F. N. McDermott, Provincial
Councillor, London, Mrs. Alex Dawson, Provincial
Education, Embro and Mrs. C. H. Dalton, Provincial
Organizing Secretary, London, were all present for the
occasion. - - - Many were honored at Clinton Town
Banquet: Plaque to former Sgt. LeRoy Oesch; retiring
firemen, Bob Draper and Bob Carter; some Clinton Colts,
Rick Fremlin, Paul Bartliff, Danny Colquhoun and Cameron
MacDonald; former recreation director, Doug. Andrews;
Butch Fleet by Crawford Douglas for the Intermediate 'C'
Championship.
The Wingham Advance-Times reports that Mrs.Cathers
of Minnie Street was honored with a surprise party on the
occasion of her 95th birthday. - - - Paul Rintoul, general
contractor of Wingham, was awarded the contract of
making alterations to the Armouries building which is to
be used as a new police office. The tender bid was
$16,392. - - - Lion President Gord Walter with past
president "Casey" Casemore presented $1,500 to the
Town of Wingham towards the cost of erecting reflecting
street signs throughout the town. The presentation was
made to Councillor John Bateson, chairman of the works
committee of council. Posts and signs will be erected
in the Spring.
