Snow or No, It's
Always "White
Christmas"
The traditional image of
an outdoor Christmas scene
brings to mind, for most of
us, the brilliance of sun-
light on snow-covered fields
and hills. But this is an
idea that originated in the
northern parts of Europe
and America—and of course
it doesn't really apply to
the climate in many parts
of our country.
In southern California,
for instance, roses are
blooming at Christmas—in-
deed, we all know this if
only because of the famous
New. Year's "Rose Bowl"
football game. And in Flor-
ida, at Christmas time,
there's apt to be a hot sun
beaming down on sand.
CRECHE and its makers, all three boys being students at
the Harlem Art Carnival. Their materials were double-
weight cardboard, paint, and glue. A bit of collage was
part of their technique in creating this traditional
Christmas decoration, Photo from Harlem Art Carnival

JAME SWAY:
TODAYS CHILD
By HELEN ALLEN
HE'S ALWAYS ACTIVE
With his happy smile, Randy doesn't look like a little
boy with a problem. But five-year-old Randy has cerebral

with, his happy smile, Randy doesn't look like a little
boy with a problem. But five-year-old Randy has cerebral
palsy (loss of muscle control) which handicaps him to some
extent.
Only Randy's right side is affected. He has near-normal
use of the leg, being able to walk, run and climb. Though
the use of his right hand is restricted, it is improving steadily.
Randy has had physiotherapy for a year and now does
exercises in his foster home. He is expected to improve still
further as he continues the exercises.
Tall for his age, this lad is Anglo-Saxon in descent.
He has light brown hair, blue eyes and fair skin.
In his early life Randy's potential was underestimated
and he was registered in a special nursery school for re-
tarded children. On his first day allthe staff and the school
psychologist decided he did not belong there so he was
transferred to a regular nursery school . He is now in
kindergarten, which he loves.
Randy is a lively boy who makes no concession to his
handicap in his choice of activities. He likes to be on the
go and wants to do whatever other children are doing. In-
geniously designed games help his handicapped areas.
Cheerful and co-operative, Randy tries hard to please.
Randy need s loving parents who will provide him with
stimulation, understanding and the encouragement to surmount
his handicap. It will be good if he can have older brothers
and sisters to take an interest in him and for him to imitate.
To inquire about adopting Randy, please write to Today's.
Child, Box 888, Station K, Toronto. For general adoption
information, please contact your local Children's Aid. Society.
Children's Art Carnival
Creates for Christmas.
The Children's Art Car-
nival in Harlem, in New
York City, is a lively art
center teeming with activ-
ity—ringing with the sound
of children's voices, burst-
ing with the color and form
of their creativity. Spon,
sored by the Museum of
Modern Art, it works with
about '750 children each
week, from kindergarten to
high school ages, as they
come to• take lessons in
painting, collage, sculpture,
figure drawing, film mak-
ing, and sewing. Some 45
public schools and '75 com-
munity organizations are
participating in the pro-
gram of the center.
What the children paint
and create is directly re-
lated to their feelings about
themselves, their family,
and what goes on around
them. So it is natural that
the weeks prior to Christ-
mas bring forth paintings
that show Santa Claus,
Christmas trees, snow
scenes, and so on. They also
make ornaments to hang on
their own Christmas trees
and decorations for the big
Christmas party — for ex-
ample, the creche made by
the three teen-age boys
The Executive Director of
the Carnival is Mrs. Betty
Blayton Taylor, herself a
well-known black painter,
who would like to see pro-
grams of this kind adopted
on a national basis.
