November is usually your last
chance to tidy up the garden,
says R. F. Gomme, 'horticul-
tural specialist, Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food. Clean-
ing up in the fall helps prevent
disease carry-over to next year
and makes spring gardening eas-
ier.
Plarit ' residues and dead
leaves can be removed and
deposited in a compost pile. Edge
flower-and shrub borders with a
sharp spade and give gardens
-a light raking to make them look
neater.
If you want to do some land-
scaping, there is still time. Tref
and shrubs can be planted until
the ground freezes solid. Re-
cently planted evergreens should
be watered to prevent the foliage
from drying out over the winter.
DONATE YOUR EYES WITH
A PLEDGE CARD
You can help many more blind '
people to see again by pledging
your eyes. Simply obtain a pledge
card from your nearest office
of The Canaidan National Ins-
titute for the Blind or your
doctor. Sign it and mail it to
the CNIB. Tell your family doc-
tor and clergyman to carry out
your wish at the time of death.
Traffic throttles
movement in cities
Centuries ago, the emperor
fiddled while Rome burned.
To-daythere's another twist. A
City Hall official in Rome re-
marked recently, giff we don't
do something soon, Rome will
die of traffic thrombosis." So
will other cities of the world.
The air pollution from cars
cramming into Rome is making
its ancient marble crumble and
damaging the lungs of its res-
idents. As a result, Rome is
turning to public transit as one
possible solution.
The traffic commissioner in
Rome has proposed that bus and
streetcar fares be abolished per-
manently during the morning and
evening rush hours. In January,
the city offered free fares in
a nine-day experiment. During
those days, the number of pass-
engers increased by 50 percent.
And of 14,000 passengers who fill-
ed in questionaires, 11 percent
said they had left their cars'
at home to try the no-fare
system.
Free public transit is an idea
that's being considered else-
where. The Bronx Borough Pre-
sident in. New York City has
urged free public transit. In
Chicago, transitauthorities are
considering a proposal to offer
, free bus service around the Loop
• as a possible first step to elim-
inating fares throughout the City.
The City Council in Sacramento,
California has endorsed a plan
for free public transit. And
a town in the southern part of the
state, Commerce, has been pro-
viding free bus service since
1962.
