Ray Geiger, Philom, the Ed-
itor of the Farmers' AlManac,
will be visiting Ontarlonelp in,
the distribution of the 1973 Can-
adian edition for it's sponsor?
Victoria and Grey Trust Com-
pany.
It is possible that no other
publication, other than the Bible
and, dictionary, has been read
by more people (well over 4
million copies in 1972) than the,
Farmers' Almanac, It was al-
most a way of life for manyof
our grandparents and, great-
grandparents with its weather
forecasts (there is a special
Canadian section), and, timing
for the planting of crops, and
treating of livestock, and then
there are calendars, recipes,
siwife savers", a fishing guide,
history, astrology, astronomy,
and last, but not least, the Al-
manac humour.
Ray Geiger has been the Ed-
itor for 39 of the 156 years of
publication - there have been
just five editors altogether. Ray
graduated with honours in phil-
osophy from NI:Are Dame Univer-
sity in 1932, and joined his father
in the family business, Geiger
Brothers Printing, Bookbinding,
and Advertising Specialties. One
of his duties, was to assist the
Editor of the Farmers' Almanac,
and in 1934 when the Editor
retired, he asked him to take
over. Much of the material
used in the Almanac comes from
its army of readers (some 20,000
letters are received each year.)
The Bishop of Atlanta is a reg-
ular contributor, and ,so is a
long-time inmate of a Kansas
prison (he has lots of time to
read arid clip, but Ray hopes
he is not serving a term for
plagiarism). The recipes and
household hints are contributed
by the lovely Mrs. Ann Geiger,
and the weather predictions are
prepared by Harry K. Buie, a
former Professor of Astronomy
at the University of Florida.
The Farmers' Almanacs are
not for sale, but the Canadian
edition is distributed free as a
good will gesture by Victoria
and Grey Trust Company.
The farmers

for one half hour to ventilate
it. Most silo gases are heavier
than air and may sink down the
shaft and fill the barn or feed
room with poison gas.
Farmers are advised to keep
feed room doors open and stables
well ventilated to prevent loss of
livestock or possibly human the
for the first feW days following
silo filling.
