News of Belgrave Couples celebrate 50th wedding. anniversaries Correspondent Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse Mr. & Mrs. GEORGE WALKER Mr. and Mrs. George walker of Belgrave were honoured at a family dinner in Belgrave In- stitute Hall, Saturday evening, September 16th on the occasion of their golden wedding anniver. sary. The table was centered with a three-tier wedding cake, an, arrangement of gold mums and gold candles. Mr. and Mrs. Walker were married 50 years ago at the . home of the bride's parentS on September 20, 4922, by the Rev. Cummings. Mrs, Walker was the, former Eva Humphrey, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Humphrey of St. Helen's. Mr. Walker is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Walker, Wingham: Following their marriage the couple farmed on the 12th con- , cession of East Wawanosh until they retired to Belgrave 1969, They have four sons, Howard and Wilfred of East wawanosh Township, Ernest of Wingham and Clarence of Belgrave. There are 12 grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Walker are members of Wingham United Church. Both enjoy good health and remain active for their age. Mr. and Mrs. Walker received many cards and letters including greetings from Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, Robert Stan- field! Robert McKinley, M.P. (Huron) Murray Gaunt M.P,P.. Premier William Davis and Robert Nixon, Out of town guests attended from St. Catharines, Goderich, Preston, Lucknow, St. Helen's, wingham, Clinton, Brucefieki, Brussels, Listowel, Gorrie, Au- burn, Londesboro. A happy feature of the affair was the presence of Mrs. Walk- er's aunt, Mrs. Carrie Boles of St. Catharines and an old school mate of Mr, Walker's, Albert Vodden of Clinton. The young- est one attending was three month old Caroline Humphrey of Ares- ton! daughter of Mr. and. Mrs. Lorne Humphrey. MR. & MRS. H. MITCHELL On Friday evening, September 15, a dinner and dance was held in the Moorefield Community Centre, in honour of Mr. and. Mrs. Harmon Mitchell of Roth.. say, who observed their 50th wedding anniversary pa Septemr ber 12th, An open house at their home was also held on Sunday, Sept- ember 17 at which Mrs. Robert Coultes, Belgrave and Mrs. Nor.. man Keating of Wingliam poured tea. On September 12, 1922, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell were married at the home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Coil- tes in Morris Township, by the late Rev. C. Jenes, Mr.Mitchell is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Mitchell of Mary- boro Twp. After their marriage they fartned. in Maryboro Twp. for several years and are now residing in Rothsay. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell have five children, Ken of Snelgr eve, (Ruth) Mrs. Don Conway of Washington, U.S.A., (Norah) Mrs. Lorne Doig and Jack both of Maryboro Twp. and Dale of scar- born. There are 22 grandchild- ren. Mrs. Mitchell has one sister, Mrs. Cela Keating of Wingham and one brother, Mr. Robert Coultes of Belgrave. U.C.W. HAS MEETING The Afternoon Unit of the U.C.W. Met in the Sunday School room with Mrs. Walter Scott in charge' of the worship service. Mrs. Scott read a poem "Wornens Lib goes way back" found in an old book published in 1895 explaining the rights of women. Mrs. Scott's second reading stated that for most churches the year begins In September, What have we got for this year/ We have a great many people who are in deep trouble; many have a Gospel that declares that a man may be0orne a new creature through the power of God. We've never known a time in the history of our church when there was a greater need for a clear and faithful proclamation of the Gospel,. than right now. The general meeting will be held early in October when Mrs. Harold Anderson of London, for- merly of Belgrave will show slides of her tour to Africa. The Bible study was Romans: faith, and faith alone, from Pro- fessor William Barclay's article in the ,Observer. Auxiliary work on badges The Beigrave Junior Auxil- iary met in the Orange Hall Saturday morning with fourteen girls present and with Connie Meurs leading in the games. Sheila Anderson took charge of the roll call. Minutes were read by Connie Meurs and the treasurer's report by Dianne Scott. Leaders for the next meet- ing. Games - Dianne Scott, sing song - Andy Campbell; To help with worship service - Bonnie Walker; Two clean-up girls - Sheila Anderson and Judy Car- michael. Audrey Scott helped with the workshop service. Melanie Scott and Johanna Van Camp collected the offering. The Senior and Junior girls worked on their special badge work. Meribeth and Melanie Scott and Johanna Van Camp were guests. President'Dor- een Taylor opened the meeting and a short discussion followed. The,. girls went outside to pre- pare shiskabobs forbarbecueing. Girls pkiy :bolt The ,BelgiaVe• Ball Park this summer was not only the scene. 'of 'boys ball 'games • but also . some girls. ball games. Early this summer several young girls • decided' they would like to play too so a team was formed and 6 games were played. Of these they won 3 and. lost 3. Those girlS taking part Were; Misses Doreen Anderson, Dor- een Taylor, Donelda Lamont,: Maxine Procter, Kitty Hattleib, Dianne Scott, Mary and Joanne Bakelaar, Joan Leishmann, Heather Currie, Janice, Joanne and Karen Coultes..* The coach was Mrs. William Coultes. The girls hope for more action next year. UCW The U.C.W. met at the home of Mrs. Cliff Logan with eleven present. Miss Annie Cook opened the worship service and Mrs. Mur- ray Lougheed ,he scripture from Psalr ,:•ses 1 - 24. Mrs. Cliff read a story. Mrs. Hari :,:cent read a Prayer entitled "My Work". "C '? Labour on spend be spent" was sung. Mrs. Harold Vincent received and dedicated the offering. Articles for the Midwestern Regional Centre at Palmerston are to be left in the church base- ment. Library books and records are requested. The next meeting is to be held at the home of Mrs.Lewis 'Stonehouse on October 12. Stonehouse on October 12 with Mrs. Ross Anderson's group in charge of program, Mrs.Clltf Logan, lunch and Mrs. William Coultes, the worship. Mrs. George Michie, Mrs. James Coultes and Mrs. Ross.
