world of today. They do not
want their young people to learn
that such things take place. You
cannot keep them wrapped in
cotton wool. Some day they must
go out into the world and face
things as they are. Closing your
eyes and mind to the sordid
things that occur does not make
them cease to happen. What
better way to protect against
them than to be aware, by know-
ing, and acknowledging they do
exist. To know and be alert to
combat them, is better preparat-
ion than to have our eyes shut
and be thrust, unarmed with
knowledge, into life in a world
that abounds in happenings we
deplore.

The chilling scream of the
fire siren sounded here about
4 p.m. last Thursday. Our local
firemen responded promptly to
the call. Fortunately at their
arrival at the fire hall they
found that it had been a false
alarm triggered off in some un-
known manner.

It was heartening to see a
number of young men at ,the
meeting held Thursday evening
of last week to discuss the pro-
blem of noise and reckless dri-
ving in the Village of Brussels.
The attendance was not as large
as could have been anticipated
from the number of complaints
that have been heard. Reeve J.
L. ivlcCutcheon emphasized that
the meeting was not called to
charge, or point a finger at
young people; older people are
also guilty of offences. Cpl.
C. R, Croskill of the Wingham
Detachment of the O.P.P. stated
that the police must have the co-
operation of young and old alike
to be able to deal effectively
with the problem. People hesitate
to inform On others but they
should for, in reality, the y are
doing the offenders a favour,
perhaps even saving their lives,
or the lives of others. It Was
pointed out by some members
of the audience, that people are
afraid of some form of retali-
ation if they are suspected of
having informed on anyone. It
is doubtful whether or not any-
thing was acdompliShed by the
meeting but at least the subject
was discussed and it is hoped
some lessening of the problem
Will result.
