REV. REMI J. DURAND
Rev. Remi Joseph Durand,
74, of St. Joseph's Roman Cath-
olic Church, Stratford, died in the
rectory Saturday.
He was born in St. Joseph's
Ont., the son of Remi Durand
and the former Rachel Laporte.
Father Durand served for
may years as the Dublin parish
priest. He resigned two years
ago to work as an associate
pastor of St. Joseph's Church.
Ordained in 1928,, he had been
pastor of churches in. Brussels,
Wingham, Harrow and Windsor.
He is survived by five broth-
ers, Gilbert, of Leamington;
Charles, of Lansing, Mich.; John
of Detroit; Joseph of London;
NORMAN SYDNEY SMITH
A native of Brussels, Norman
Sydney Smith, age 87, died
suddenly on August It h at his
home at Borden, Sask. He came
from a family of Scottish pioneer
stock, all six of whom had been
born and raised in Brussels. His
two sisters, Miss Dora Smith
and Mrs. Kate McRae had pre-
deceased him, as had his three
brothers, Frank R. and J. Arthur
Smith, druggists, and George, a
brother who had died in childhood.
As a youth, NormanSmith had
gone out west in 1906, to Prince
Albert. From employment there
he took a homestead at Borden,
and Rev. Anthony, of Zurich, Ont.
six sisters, Mrs. Michael (Ver-
onica) Havrigan, and,Mrs. Matth-
ew (Videll) Murphy of Detroit;
Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Hurley, of
Stratford;, Mrs. C. (Loretta)
Hartlieb, of Kitchener; Mrs. Ar-
thur (Lenore) Montpetit, of Mont-
real; Sister Mary Rachel (Anne)
of Chatham.
The body was at the Gingras
funeral home where a service
was held at 11 a.m. Monday.
Removal was made to St.
Patrick's Church, Dublin where
the body lay until 11 a.m. Tues-
day when concelebrated mass
was held.
Burial followed in the church-
cemetery.
Sask.
Sask, and in 1907 opened a
general store, Smith & Mc-
Quarrie's there. His partner, the
late W. L. McQuarrie also had
been a Brussels boy. From the
opening of the Smith & McQuarrie
store in 1907 until 1943 when it
was Sold to a longtime employee,
Norman Smith had provided
steady employment even through-
out the depression years for his
staff, several having been em-
ployed there for 3 0 years or
more.
Mr. Smith was a dedicated
member of the Masonic Order, a
pastmaster of Borden Lodge, a
past district deputy, a 33rd
Degree Member of the Scottish
Rite, a member of the Royal
Arch, the Royal Order of Scotland
and of the Shrine.
Norman Smith was pre-
deceased by his wife , Ruby
Stewart, and is survived by their
daughter, Ruby of Vancouver. In
1953 he was married to Miss V.
Hayter who also survives him.
Burial was at the family plot
at Edmonton.
