If you pay taxes on land that returns only a few day's Spring grazing, it may appear to be more of a liability than an asset. flow ever, you can take rundown pasture land that once was pro- dlietive and renovate it to increase production four or five- fold, There are three major stages; preparation of the site the year prior to renovation, e.g. 0,4-D to control perennial weeds; reno- vation with dalapon, bird's-foot trefoil, and fertilizer, and seed- ing year management - grazing and fertility requirements. The major barrier to this kind of renovation is its cost. Cost of material and'application in the renovated year average $30 per acre. There is a certain amount of risk involved, espec- ially in a dry year. From on-farm results to date, it would a.ppear that renovation is completely successful about 75 per cent of the time, increasing the cost to about $40 per acre of renovated land. This would appear expen- sive, particularly if you are in an area where roughland pasture may be purchased for $30 to $40 per acre. However, the costs of reno- vation are spread out over 10 years and the cost of annual fertilizer applications taken into account, an annual net return of $10 per acre might be expected to increase to $55 per acre after three years. High costs and low returns during the initial years place renovation at a disadvantage compared to non-renovated land. However, in the 3rd to 20th year, net income obtained from improved pasture is greatly in- rreased: STEPHENSON'S BAKERY GROCERY Sunshine FROZEN PAS n r A *4 A " 2 lbs. 490 Carlton Club Coke, Orange, Ginger Ale 24 cans 1.99 Van Camp PORK and BEANS . • • 28-oz, 390 KNECH.TELS CATSUP , • 20-oz. 390 FREE DELIVERY Phone 887-9226 Miss Bonnie Rea of Atwood was the organist and accom- panied Mr. Graeme Craig of Walton, who sang "Wedding Prayer", "Walk Hand in Hand".
