The Brussels United Church
was the scene of much activity
during the Centennial weekend.
On Saturday afternoon the lad-
les of the church served a smor-
gasbord supper to more than nine
hundred centennial celebrants.
On Sunday morning impres-
ive worship service was held for
a capacity congregation which
overflowed on to the church lawn.
The service was conducted by the
minister Rev. E. Le Drew. Four
former ministers and the widow
of one former minister were pre-
sent and participated in the ser-
vice.
Rev. Hugh Wilson dedicated a
lighted cross that had been placed
at the rear of the sanctuary
by the Hoover family in memory
of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Hoover.
The background had been panell.r
ed to enhance the beauty of the
cross.
Rev. Harry Mahoney led in
prayer and brought greetings.
Mrs. A. W. Barkerextended
congratulations to Brussels and
to the church.
Rev. Andrew Lane of God-
erich delighted all present
with his humorous reminisences
of his ministry,
Rev. Allan Johnston read the
scripture and then sum.arized his
ministry in a poem which he
had composed.
All' were warmly applauded.
The church choir with Mrs,
Alice Pope Brothers at the organ
and Mrs. Mary Davison Bryans
at the piano sang two anthems.
"Blessed Is The Nation" and
"The Centennial Hymn".
Mrs. Laurie Cousins and
Murray Hoover rendered "Bless
This House" as a duet.
Rev. Derwyn Dockens address
was "The Next. Hundred years".
Following the service lunch
was served on the church lawn
where many renewed old acqu-
aintances and friends which did
not end until three o'clock.
Rev. Le Drew went on hol-
idays as of July 10th, and the
services are discontinued until
Sunday August 13th During
that time, the congregation has
been invited to attend services
at Melville PresbyterianChurch.
