Our Motto:— "AFTER WE SELL — WE SERVICE" In spite. of. the constant threat of rain a goecily number of res, idents of the community, with guests, gathered at the newly erected, plaque on the present school grounds to witness the unveiling on Thursday evening. Among those present were a. number of ex,stiidents: who, had, attended classes in the old schOol, Ken Scott,. prinCipal. of the Brussels public .School, as, Master of ceremonies for the. • occasion extended a welcome and Introduced the program which commenced with a drum and pipe prelude by Misses Susan 14:ang,- lois and Gwen Bernard., Brief speeches were given, by Reeve J. L. McCutcheon of Brussels and Donald McDonald of the Huron County School Board. Mrs. Hazel :Matheson of Brussels,: a. former teacher, gave a short hstorical resume on the former school, recalling postal,. gic memories. She said, It was a most appropriate link in the history of Brussels. Erected in 1895 it had a long history of dedicated teachers. Ashton, a long time Member of the teaching staff, as both teacher and principal. The inscription on it reads: Mr. 1‹. L. Ashton Dedicated Teacher and principal 1932 - 1967 In speaking Arior to the deli. dication, Miss- Luella Mitchell." • a member of the present teaching staff, said mr. Ashton, had earn ed the honor awarded him and. spoke highly of ,his contribution made to the community, both as teacher and principal, with ser- vice beyond the call of duty. She men tioned his active interest in sports activities, having been coach of the girl's ball team, when they won the W.O. Champ- ionship, The unveiling was performed by Mrs. Ken Tyerman, teacher, and Miss Mitchell. Mr. Scott, during the pro- gram, paid tribute to Robert Raymond, who designed the cairn, to Wm. Stratychuk of Listowel, a former Brussels resident, who contributed to the plaque, as well as the teachers, and to the. Huron County School Board who provided a generous grant to the cost of the cairn. At the close all present were invited into the schbol for the concert which followed. They were piped into the school by Susan Langlois and Gwen Ber- nard. THANK YOU To the executive, chairmen and assist- ants of the different CentennialCom- mittees, the Brussels Council, Town- ship of Morris, Township of Grey, Brussels firemen and their wives, Women's Institute, Brussels Agricul- tural Society, CKNX and all who participated to make Brussels Centen- nial 1972 a grand and glorious success. Following the unveiling ceremonies of the plaque the public crowded the school auditorium for the Van, iety concert. The varied concert was thor.6 Oughly enjoyed by all who were in attendance. The program in., M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W M & W cluded, The Good Intentions, Highland Dancing by Susan Lang- lois and Carol wheeler, solos by Linda Wilson, Mrs. Betty Campbell and Cathy McGavin, duet, The „tingles, The Silver Strings Orchestra, accordian solos, Charlie, Step dancing, Young Centennial Stompers, Barbershop quartette, Two Town Four, Band Majestic Stompers, The beard judging took place also at the end of the program and the bevy of beautiful young ladies who were in the Queen Contest were presented to the audience.
