Floricultural Society founded in 1954 The Brussels Horticultural Society was organized in 1954 under the capable guidance of Cliff Epps of Clinton then District, Director of District .8. Officers during the first year were President - Mrs. E. Cud- more; 1st Vice - Mrs. Wm; Bell; Sec.Vice - Mrs. John Gibson; Sec.Treas.- Mrs. J. C. Adams. Directors were - mrs. At Mann, Mrs. Wm. Evans, Miss 'Addle Cardiff, Miss C. Dickson; Mrs. K. Shurrie,Mrs. Wm. Turnbull, Mrs. J. Wheler, Mrs. L. Work- man, Mrs. Ken Tyermah, Mrs. C. Long. The first meeting had an attendance of 29 members but by the year end there were 76 members. Seven charter mem- bers continue tleir activity in the Society. Over the years the Society has had eight presidents and three secretaries. Services to members include the purchase of plants, bulbs and shrubs.y Indicating the change in time's begonia bulbs' were bought at in 1954. In 1972 they were 34. The Society was host for the District Convention in' 1956 and again in 1968. In 1967 as a Centennial pro- ject a park was 'erected out of a triangular piece of wasteland that grew mostly weeds, when 'memorial trees, Centennial crab trees and park beds of flowers were planted. Called Centennial Park t the area contains picnic tables and is a pretty spot in which to rest andpicnic. Through the years flower beds have been maintained on boulevards, at churches, the Legion, the Mun- icipal Building, the Library, the Medical Clinic and at the Fair Grounds. Including plants and labor about $500.00 is spent each year on these projects. The Ontario Horticultural So- ciety is divided into .districts • and Brussels is in District 8 which includes approximately 21 Societies. There are 16 dis- tricts in the province and each district has an, annual convention., The districts are headed, by a • District Director and one or two assistants. A Provincial Conven- tion is held each year at different places across the province. The Brussels society spon- sors spring and summer flower shows, the spring 'being non com- petitive with a floral display and a tea. The summer show is in August when from 225 to 250 entries are received. This is a money making project and also features a•turkey 'supper. • • • The 1972 slate of officers are 'President - Mrs. 'Wm.
