Brussels Lions Club Advances Community Projects
. The' Brussels Lions Club
came into being at a meeting on
March 21, 1946. The new
club was sponsored by the Sea-
forth Club assisted by Deputy
District Governor 'Lloyd Edig-
hoffer of Mitchell. '
The club received its charter
the following month on April 17
at, a dinner held in ,Melville
Presbyterian Church. There
were 41 charter members.
The first officers Were:
President - Roy Cousins; 1st
Vice President - Lorne Eck-
, mier; 2nd. Vice President -
Robert Bowman; 3rd. Vice Presi-
dent - Rev. Hugh Wilson; Sec-
retary • - Robert. E. Johnson;
Treasurer - R. B. (Barney) Mc-
Bride; Liol-.1 Tamer - Maurice
Laycock; Tail Twister - Alkin
Ra.nn; Directors, Ken Ashton,
-Albert Wood, Maurice Wineberg,
Richard Whitfield.
During the more • than a
quarter century since the Club
was formed, it has assisted or
taken the lead , in many worth-
while community projects. In-
cluded among its activities have
been
-Sponsorship of a boys and
girls band with an initial outlay
of $2,000.00. .
- Cooperation with the Legion
to build a wadini pool.
- Took the initiative in start-
ing a school in this area for're-
tarded children. ,;•
- Placed swings and slides in
play grounds in Brussels, Ethel
and Walton.
-Direction of the annual fund
raising campaign for Christmas
Seals, Easter Seals, Crippled
children and C.N.I. for the Blind
- Maintenance of the Picnic
Park by the bridge.
