The Reeve and members
of Council share with the
citizens of Brussels in wel-
coming all those who have
• returned to celebrate with us
the occasion of our 100th
Birthday.
Although our population
has decreased we are proud
of our progress over the
years. Some of the accom-
• the century include the erec-
plishments since the turn of
tion of the Brussels Carnegie
Library in 1905; 1906 electric
lights; B. M. & G. telephone
in 1907; a steam gener-
ated hydro plant operated by
W. J. Irwin and later by
• Robert Thuell prior to the
coming of Ontario Hydro
in 1923; Community Arena in
1931 and renovated 1961 and
artificial ice in 1963. In 1935
the existing Post Office was
erected. A complete water
system including well,stbrage
tank,, mains and hydrants was
0 installed in 1948 under the
Reeveship of R.B. Cousins
Since that time a second well
and pump was erected in the
north end of the village in
1963. Through the efforts
of H. R. Pearson, Recreation
chairman and by public sub-
scription, flood lights *were
installed in Victoria Park in
1949. In 1956 the County of
Huron replaced the old iron
overhead bridge and erected
the modern concrete bridge.
The new telephone office was
built in 1959 and the Village
•
then purchased the old build-
ing which is our present day
Munidipal Office.
In 1959 the wading pool

was constructed.
One of the major changes
in education came with the
erection of the Brussels
Public School in 1960, which
later became a CentralSchool
Area and included Morris
Twp.
In the late fall of 1961
and spring of 1962 the old
Town Hall and. Bell Tower,
one of our older landmarks,
was demolished and on the
same site the present Royal
Canadian Legion Hall was built
in 1962. Also in 1962 a
two bay fire hall was pur-
chased and the old fire truck
was supplemented by a newer
and larger unit in 1967. Other
1967 additions include the
Public Utilities Warehouse
and the Dominion Centennial
project as a bath and change
house at the Park.
Another major community
building program, the Medical
Dental Centre was completed
with the aid of public sub-
scription and the guidance of
J. H. Stretton.
A program of street con-
struction and paving was
started in 1957 and now over
75% of the streets are
!asphalt surface.
Our fair Village and com-
munity supports four
churches, three fraternal
organizations and the Royal
Canadian Legion and an active
Lions' Service Club along with
several ladies groups.
In 1957 the former home
of D.G.Ross was converted
into a nursing home and by
renovations and additions now
accommodates 39 beds.
