Modern water syStem
serves all Brussels BRUSSELS 1879
Qn. Wednesday, July 22,
1949 a new era in the munici-
pal history of Brussels began
when the water was turned on,
through the mains of a muni-
cipally-owned water system.
Hitherto in its corporate exis-
tence, Brussels had depended
on private wells for its water
supply. At a post of more than
$100,000, the village undertook
a public system which connected
to approximately 200 of the 300
households in, the municipality.
The village water system is
based on a. 215-foot driven well
from which water is taken by
electric pumps with a capacity
of 100 gallons a minute. To
guard against hydro-electric
power failures, and to double-
bank the fire protection aspect
of the water system, an auxil-
iary gasoline-powered pump is
installed, which is capable of
pumping at the rate of more than
500 gallons a minute.
Water was officially turned
through the mains by Coun. A.
McTaggart who, with Reeve Roy

Cousins, took the leading part in
planning and overseeing the in-
stallation of the mains, reser-
voir and pumping equipment. The
throwing of a switch at the new
pumphouse signalized the
inauguration of the system.
Before the water was turned
through the mains, the mains
had been filled with a highly con-
centrated solution of chlorine
which had been allowed to stand
in them for several days,. and
was then flushed out. Chlorin-
ation was continued a t a generous
rate until experience had been
gained with the new water supply.
While the well-driving was in
progress, samples of water were
taken each 50 feet, and again at
the bottom of the 215-foot well;
all samples taken in the course
of well-driving were graded "A".
Cost of installing the"water
system included the purchase
and installation of 40, fire
hydrants, which are distributed
to provide accessible, fire-fight-
ing water for all parts of the
Village. Tests were conducted
by the Brussels fire department,
under Chief M. Thompson
to check hose connections and
pressure at the new hydrants.
Mains were connected to the
basements of approximately 200
homes and business places in the
village, but not all of them were
able to start using the water at
once. Shortage of plumbing fix-
tures in some cases had delayed
the final hook-up of water service
to individual consumers.
