The weatherman co-operated when pupils of the Brussels school planted Centennial trees
on the school lawn Tuesday morning. Here Principal Mr. Ken Scott, (with his back to the

Murray Nichol and explains how the job is to be done. (Staff Photo)
Recommend hot weather
ventilation in farm buildings .
As summer approaches, live-
stock operators should check the
ventilation systems in their
barns. Maximum air movement
through the building is required
during hot weather. Operators
should ensure that the fans will
deliver their rated capacity, says
M. Sojak, Engineering Division,
Ridgetown College of Agricultur-
al Technology.
The following are some of his
recommendations. for maximum
efficiency of the ventilation sys-
tem. First louvers should be
clean and working properly.
Heavy loads of dirt caked on the
louvers or fan blades can ser-
iously reduce the fan output.
Fan drive belts should be re-
placed if damaged. They should
also be tightened properly to'
avoid slippage.
Air inlets to the building
should be adjusted to allow pas-
sage of the greater volumes of air
needed. Some operators partially
block air inlets from the outside
to reduce the amount of snow
entering during the winter. These
should be removed for spring and
summer ventilation.
When outside temperatures
fluctuate, particularly in late
spring and early summer, full
fan capacity is not required. The
fans should cut in and out as
required. This is accomplished
by staggering the temperature
setting on thermostats so that
fan operation is sequenced. When
the thermostats engage simultan-
eously, the building will over-
ventilate during cold nights.
A properly designed fan vent-
ilation system for a high density
livestock building requires that
building doors be closed. If they
-are open, more air may enter
the building. The distribution of
air is extremely uneven. Some
parts will be overventilated with
drafts. Other areas will be under-
ventilated. leaving stagnant areas
where temperatures and gases
can build up to dangerously high
levels.
No standard ventilation sys-
tem can be expected to lower the
temperature in the barn below the
temperature of the 'outside air,
said Mr. Sojak. Generally a rise
of 3 to 5 degrees F above the
outside air can be expected.
