FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21. 1881. UNHAPPY IRELAND. Parnell has at last been arrested, and lodged at Kilmainham jail. The uo- curence has thrown Ireland into a fer- ment, and although there are some who contend that with the arrest of the acknowledged leader the back of thereat agitation is broken -as happened whoa O'Connell was incarcerated nearly forty years ago -yet there are other who believe that the action of the Govern- ment will but add fuel to the flame of dis- content, and who predict a heavier growth for the agitation. Egan, the secretary, who resides in Paris --and can, therefore, with judice be called the Foreign Sec- retary -sees a blessing in disguise in the arrest of Parnell and his colleague, and would give the impression that even if he (Egan) were arrested, the land League would not crumble to dust; but he does not like to subject it to so severe a test, and will keep the English channel between himself and the myr- midons of England, as long as he as Taking a serious view of the question it seem to us that the action of Parnell and his associates has been ,provocative in the extreme, and if ever a Gov- ernment was forced to employ restric- tive measures, it is beyond question that one presided over by Mr. .Glad- stone. His efforts to work o$ constitut- ionally the grievances to which Ireland has been subjected in the peat, have not been met by the League members in a proper spirit. Because a whole loaf an nut be got by one who hungers, is no reason why a portion of a loaf should be rejected with scorn. Gladstone'sLand Bill promoted, in all conscience, ameliora- tion of certain existing grievance*, yet a fair chance for working is not afforded it, and the agitators become, if anything, more pressing in their demand.. For years Home Rule- has been eked for Ireland by her dissaatisfied members, and last week Mr. Gladstone in a speech at the Guildhall, foreshadowed the pos- sibility of such legislation for local pur- poses, and thus threatens to take away another -and perhaps the most serious - grievance from the agitators. We have hitherto been of opinion that a Parlia- ment at College Green would bee pan- acea for the evils that afflict Ireland, but in the light of present events our faith is hardly so strong in regard to this matter as it once was. Tee Toronto Normal School was pret- ty roundly abused at the recent sitting ef.the West Huron Teachers Associa- tion. The School hal not one defender; and the teachers who slake about it could hardly find language strung enough to condemn the institution. The bur- den of the complaint was that the tilde spent there was alai ,it wasted. The teachers who had b,ea at the Normal were a unit in "pitching into" it, and a resolution calling for a thorough investi- gation of its management was carried unanimously. It's a pretty sour apple thatnobo•iy cares for, and thefactthat the Model School in Toronto wasspoken of in acommeudatory way, shows that there is no mere sectional feeling in the matter. THE Warden's committee met at the Clerk's uftice on Tuesday last to take action in the matter of the iron bridge contract. The company which secured the contract at the June meeting has so far failed tokeep faith with the council in the matter of building the bridge. They have been written to on the ratter, but have failed to respond. Hence the action of the warden's committee. All the mem- ber were present except Mr. Hardy, who is absent in Manitoba. After fully dis- cussing the subject, the Warden and Mr. (Nevin were appointed a deputation to proceed to Hamilton end interview the aansger of the Company regarding the matter. It is to be hoped they will suc- ceed in bringing that iadividstal 10 a proper asses of kis position on the bridge quatios. Something will have ie be done slhoa • 1,. A young man named Hunter of Mill- brook received iniuries through the ex- plosion of Sykes air -bath at Oshawa when undergoing treatment for deafness and catarrh about three years ago. In Rockwood Asylum there is a luna- tic who passes away his time manufactur- ing $20,000 bills. The paper of which the bills are made is similar to that of which bank bills are made, and no one knows where he gets it, nor yet has any- one seen the stamp that he uses. He also makes tobacco out of a certain kind of leaves which are said to so closely re- semble the legitimate article that it is hard to distinguish the difference. He supplies many of his companions with the wherewithal to have many a com- fortable smoke. A few weeks ago a very destructive hail storm visited a small portion of the township of Alice. Not a. leaf was left on any of the apple or plum trees in the orchard of Mr. James Hamilton one of the sufferers, the hail having completely denuded them. It was thought that the trees would remain in this condition un- til next spring. Not so, however; they shortly afterwards commenced to present buds, which subsequently became leaves, and,not content with this, both the apple and the plum trees shot out delicate blossoms, and are at present in full blootln. They present an appearance ex- actly similar to that which they presented while in bloom last spring. I had splendid tines running around Tiverton afternoon and in the forenoon I was not doing anything, Yours truly, M. BLANK. Unquestionably the critical test of a man's principle lies in the influence which society exerts over him. If im- moral society is a temptation to evil courses, the influence of proper assoc- iate is equally strong in the opposite direction. Society may he a temptation for good as well as for evil. To a young man, who. for many circumstances, may be momentarily inclined to turn aside from the path of honor and rectitude, the presence of an upright person will act u a rebuke and prevent him from falling, while the very atmosphere of society of this kind willkeep his morals unoorrupt- ed, keep his thoughts far away from im- proper channels and be a moral fence around him, effectually preventing nin., unless obstinately determined from go- ing astray. It might be urged that this is allowing too little scope for the exer- cise of individual discretion, but the strongest -minded people are influenced by,surrounding circumstances. Death et J. G. Ilaliaad. J. G. Holland the poet, died suddenly at New York, on Wednesday, Oct. 12. Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland was born at Bekhertnwn, Mass. Culy 24, 1819. He graduated at Berkshire Medial College, Pittsfield, and practiced medicine three year.. For some time he was an editor at Springfield, Miss., and for one year was Superintendent of Schools at Vicks- burg, Mass. In 1849 he became associate editor of the Springfield Republican, a position he held some 17 years. His first appearance as an author was in 1855 when he published a "History of West- ern Massachusetts' in two volumes, and his first novel, "The Boy Path," woks given to the public in 1837. Froth this time to his death he was a prolific writer, his works following each other in rapid succession, and including esaays, atones, poems, biographies and nearly all classes of literature. For some years he pub- lished under the name of "Timothy Tit- coml.," a nom de plume by which he is even now mere widely known than by his real name. In 1870 he become the editor of Scribner's Monthly, and to his ahilful management and valuable con- tributions the remarkable success of that marazino is largely due. The aggregate sale of hiabooke is believed tg exceed the circulation of any ether American author, amounting to over 500,000 copies. A revision and reissue of the whole series has just been announced. Besides his literary gifts Mr. Holland was a man of rare social and moral qualities, and his influence, especially over the young, was far reaching. He laves a widow, two young daughters and a son.
