Diet plans and counting cal-
ories are nothing new to the
poultry farmer. Various meth-
ods of restricting feed intake
have been researched and prac-
ticed since 1935 when Dr. O.B.
Kent first introduced the idea
for growing pullets on range.
In recent years there have
been many experiments conduc-
ted to develop for growing pullets
a feeding program which would
be self-restricting. Some of these
plans include low energy (low
calorie) feeds, limited feed sup-
plies, limited feeding time and
even skipping meals on one or
two days a week. Some programs
are being recommended espec-
ially for heavy meaty-type pullets
which produce hatching eggs for
the broiler hatcheries.
The benefits of such a pro-
gram are many: lower growing
feed costs, higher rates of egg
production, fewer small eggs,
lower adult mortality and exten-
ded reproductive life of laying
hens. Experiments with rats have
shown that the life span of rats
fed limited amounts of feed is
longer than with' rats which are
obese because of eating all they
wanted.
Recently, experiments have
been conducted in which feed
was restricted to control gains
in body weight in birds laying
eggs. Increased body weight in
mature birds is mostly body fat.
As in humans, food requirements
decrease with age.
Recent experiments with
In tournament play, the
Brussels BantaMs lost a game
and were knocked out of a Our-
nament, and wen a game in an-
other tournament and advanced
to the semi-finals..
On Saturday, Brussels tied
Paisley Bantams 1 - 1 in the
Harriston Bantam Hockey Tour-
nament but lost the game by
shots on goal and were elimin-
ated from that tournament.
Early Sunday morning, the
team travelled through adverse
weather condition s to play in
their second game in the Clin-
ton Bantam Hockey Tournament,
but when game time arrived, the
other team bad failed to ice a
team and Brussels was awarded
the game by default. The trip
was not a total waste however,
since the boys had an hour prac-
tice and were treated to a hot
beef dinner after.
The team now plays Zurich
in the Tournament semi-final
on. Saturday at 4:45 and if they
win that they will play in the
Championship game on Sunday
at 4:00 against either Grand
Bend, Paisley or Shedden.
NOVICE TEAM M EE TS ZURICH
After a week's wait the
Brussels Novice team has been
notified that they will play Zurich
in a best-of-three WOAA Novice
"E" Championship series.
Coach, Bob Richmond and
manager, Frank Stretton have
been trying to keep the boys in
shape with several practice
sessions and exhibition -games
and with a little luck the boys
should be in prime condition
to meet the Zurich team.
ZONE "2" PLAYOFFS BEGIN
T HE Zone "2" Minor Hockey
Playoff schedule was released
this week by Zone convenor
James Prior. In the Novice
category the teams will be
competing for the Bernie Laz-
ette Trophy. In the south group
Belmore plays Blyth and Mil-
verton plays Belgrave while
Wingham and Ripley play to
decide who meets Lucknow
for the north group winner. The
two group winners then play off
for the zone championship.
In the Pee Wee category,
the same structure applies with
the teams competing for the
Blyth Lions Trophy. In the
southern group Brussels tackles
Milverton while Monkton meets
chickens at Ridgetown indicate
that both male and female birds
benefit from restricted feed in-
take. Eggs produced by slower
growing, lean birds were more
-plentiful. When the females were
mated to males grown on the same
program, it was observed that
fertility was better and the eggs
hatched better than those from
birds on a full feeding program.
Enters House
Tournament
Novice and Pee Wee teams
from Brussels will participate
in the second annual Blyth House
League Tournament to be held
this Saturday. These teams are
made up of boys who don't usually
play on the teams that are entered
in the WOAA. The Pee Wee team
will play Bayfield at 3:30 and
again at 6:30 if they lose or 7:30
if they win. John Cousins is
making his debut as a coach in
this game and is a prospective
candidate for next season. Ray
Adams will be in control of the
Novice team but unlike John, this
isn't his first try. Earlier in
the year he coached this same
team when they lost 5-4 to a team
from Blyth. He's hoping for
better luck this tune. His Novice
team will play Blyth at 11:30
and if they lose they will play at
4:30 while a win would havethem
playing. at 5:30 for the champion-
ship.-
Belgrave while Kincardine Meets
Listowel and Wingham playsRip-
ley In the north group.
The teams in the Bantam
category are competing for the
Brussels ,Motore.A Trophy. The
South group has Belgrave Meet-
ing Monkton and Milverton play-
ing Brussels while the north
