According to Mrs. J. T. Patterson, National Presi- dent, The Canadian Council of the Blind, five blind women are computer programmers with large Canadian firms and one designs new systems for branch operations in her company. In a special interview for White Cane Week, Feb. 6 - 12, spon- sored by the CCB and The Can- adian National Institute for the Blind, Mrs. Patterson explained that the young women graduated from a special course at the University of Manitoba where they learned four computer languages, how to use the key punch and to compile programs. Although the blind operators gather information with Braille notation and the tape recorder, their programs are similar to those of sighted operators in every way. 'These trail blazers are lead- ers in a young industry," the CCB president said, 1,but back in 1,918 a group of young women showed the same dauntless spirit Call and rink with. The first to try their hand on a full time job, the blind seamstresses proved that a per- son could work without sight, and coon led others to the em- ployment scene. They went out to work at a time when few sighted women were earning their living," she emphasized. In 1920 CNIB sponsored the first training course for rehabi- litation teachers. Armed with Braille manuals, typing skill and a few crafts, graduates were assigned large territories made up of small towns and rural districts. Far from their own homes. they taught other blind persons the aft of independence and awakened in many of the younger people the hope of em- ployment. Over the years blind women have always been ready .to try a new career. Their own courage, a constructive training program and the interest of far sighted employers who have given them jobs has been the secret of their success. That is why this White Cane Week we are saluting in a special way blind workers and their employers from coast to coast.
