Heavy snowfalls may be
scenic ,but they can also dam-
age your trees and shrubs, says
R. W. Crawford, horticultural
specialist, Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food,
We all enjoy looking at large
evergreens or birch trees after
a heavy snow or freezing rain.
Sometimes, however, the trees
simply cannot take this extra
weight and the branches will
break if you try and shake the
• snow or ice loose. Remember
that the limbs are very cold
and brittle and can't stand any
abuse.
For large valuable speci-
mens, it may be best to call in
professional help. The workmen
will erect a large plastic shield
and use heaters to remove the
snow or ice slowly and let,the
branches regain their upright
position. In most cases, remove
excess snow gently and count on
a thaw to remove the rest. How-
ever, says Mr. Crawford, re-
member not to shake the
branches.
