TODAY'S CHILD
BY HELEN ALLEN
HAPPY AND CHEERFUL
This happy-looking baby is Larry, seven months old.
Jamaican in descent, he is a big boy for his age, sturdy and
solid, with lovely dark eyes, black tightly curled hair and • medium brown skin.
Larry is in excellent health but he has an enzyme de-
ficiency known as G6-PD. It is a fairly common condition
among American Negro males and also affects Italians,
Greeks and .Midd,le Eastern, African and Oriental races with
quite high frequency, ranging from 5 to 40 per cent. T his is a
benign condition through which the hemoglobin is affected
by certain drugs - the sulfas, anti-malarial drugs, aspirin
and Vitamin K. People with 6-PD have a normal life span
and no treatment is needed except to avoid the prescribed
drugs. •*,4
Larry is an alert, responsive baby, reaching all his
milestones at appropriate times. He has an easy-going,
cheerful disposition, chuckling and blowing bubbles at the
slightest encouragement.
This baby's medical condition should not be a problem. • He needs parents who will welcome a lovable little son and
accept the drug situation calmly. To inquire about adopting
Larry please write to Today's Child, Box 888, Station K,
Toronto. For general adoption information ask your Child-
ren's Aid Society.

Sprout Practice
Wheat is a grain that is grown
mostly in the West to keep the
farmer broke and everyone else
crazy. It is planted in the
spring, mortgaged in the summer
and frozen in the fall. Th e
man who can guess the closest
to the protein contained therein,
and the moisture content, is called
a grader by the wheat board and
a dirty rotten liar by the farmers.
It is sold by a marketing board
which they call a satisfactory
board. They are satisfied be-
cause they get ten times more
salary than they are worth. The
government is satisfied because
they put them there. The
country that buys is satisfied and
so are the railroad and the eleva-
tors, so the farmer has to be.
After you have sold your wheat
the price goes up. After you have
bought your seed it goes down.
When the government and the
wheat board get so confused they
don't know what to do they give
England 50 million bushels. Eng-
land then buys 50 million bushels
from Russia, Russia buys 50
million bushels from Canada and
everyone is satisfied again.
Last year the Manitoba
farmers sent a man to check the
board. After watching for a
week he sent the following wire:
Some think price will go up.
Some think it will go down. So
do I. I don't think. Whatever
you do will be wrong. Maybe
you should. Maybe you shouldn't.
Sometimes it does. Sometimes
it doesn't. You should act at
once. I don't think. I'm com-
mitting suicide. Suggest you do
the same.
Wheat is sold by grade, No.!,
2,3,4, etc. but it's almost im-
possible to get No. 1 owing to the
manner in which it is tested. The

elevator man shuts his eyes
and picks out one kernel. This
is placed on an anvil. He then
picks up an eight pound sledge
and hits it with all his might. If
the sledge,glances, and the kernel
bounces away you have an even
chance. If only it is cracked,
its 3 or 4. A bottle of whiskey
lying on top of a load' of wheat
so the elevator man is sure to
see it will sometimes change
the grade from No. 7 to No.2.
Then there is always the shor-
age of grain cars. The railroads
always place these cars where
the farmer has been hailed out,
burnt out, frozen out, or in a
district where they don't grow
the darn stuff at all.
The only good thing is the
farmer has no labor problems.
He hires a man for three years.
At the end of that time he owes
the man so much he gives him
the farm and goes to work for
him for another three years when
he then gets the farm back.
The quota is so small the
farmer just spends it, 20 cents
at a time. In Ontario it is
called a beverage room , in the
west it's the Quota room. They
sit there all winter, sipping the
suds, cursing the wheat board,
the government, the drought, the
frost and figuring how to get
more quota to grow more wheat.
Excuse me, I have to fneet a
gentleman in the Quota room,
This was re-arranged and
presented as a monologue, by
the Kansas Farmer at Meadow
Lake Stampede and Fair in 1946.
At the conclusion of the three
day celebration he was made a
life member of the Saskatchewan.
