GET THE BEST OUT
OF YOUR SNOWMOBILE
A. snowmobile, like any other
motorized vehicle, requires care
and proper maintenance for safe,
satisfactory performance. But it
is a breed of its own like no
other means of transportation, so
to get the best out of your snow-
mobile, the Ontario Safety League
says you must get to know it its
capabilities and limitations, Start
off by reading the Owner's Man-
uel carefully and then follow the
manufacturers suggestions on op-
eration and servicing.
The two most important con-
trols of your snowmobile are the
throttle and brake. Always make
sure that both these vital controls
are working properly before start-
ing the engine. If you have done
your homework and read the
Owner's Manuel, you will prob-
ably be able to correct any minor
adjustments. But the Ontario
Safety League warns that if
there is any doubt about being
able to control acceleration or stop
your snowmobile, do not use it
end chance an accident. Take it
to your dealer and have the prop-
er adjustments made.
Snowmobile Safety Clinics are
being conducted all over Ontario.
Be sure to attend when. the
Clinic comes to your community.
It will give you. better knowledge
of your snowmobile and how to
enjoy it safely.

KEEP LIVESTOCK HEALTHY
CHECK WINTER VENTILATION
With the onset of cold weather,
livestock producers should check
their ventilation, systems for
proper operation, says M, Sojak,
Engineering Division Ftidgetown
College of Agricu'lural Technology
For good cold weather venti-
lation for 'most livestock, suf-
ficient air is required only to re-
move moisture.
Therefore, multispeed and vari-
able speed fans should be checked
for correct operation in the low
speed ranges. Small diameter fang
used specifically for winter venti-
lation should also be checked
Louvers should be clean and
working properly. Heavy loads of
dirt caked on. the louvers or fan
blades can reduce the fan output
seriously at low-volume rates:
Fan, hoods are a good invest-
ment to reduce wind pressure,
says Mr. Sjoak.
Thermostat setting is extremely
important. Unless fans are se-
quenced to come on and off at the
correct time, even the best design-
ed system will not operate prop-
erly. Too many operators set the
thermostats to engage simultan-
eously and over-ventilation is the
result. Set the themostats at three
and possibly four settings and
check their accuracy against a
good thermometer.
Another undesirable practice is
to shut off the manual switches
to the 'large fans in winter, assum-
ing they won't he needed. These
fans should be ready fel' action at
all times in case the small moist-
ure control fan fails. If this should
happen, the temperature and
moisture would rise, thus en-
dangering livestock.
Frequently. there is not enough
livestock in. the building to keep it
warn enough, says Mr. Soja,k. A
large amount of supplement heat
is then required. To reduce this
problem in a farrowing unit, the
farmer might bring in his dry
sows prematurely, These "cheap
heaters" would help maintain the
farrowing barn temperature and
reduce heating costs.
With only a little preventive
maintainance and correct adjust,
ments, winter troubles such as
wet ceilings or unnecessarily cold,
ventilated bUildings can: b 6

GOLDEN WORDS
CHRISTMAS CARDS
As all my Christmas cards come in
They mean so much to me,
For they come from those special
folks
I'm always-glad to see.
They come from friends of long
ago,
And many far away
Who reach across the years and
miles
On every Christmas Dal'.
The message, they bring to me
I cherish year by year
And count each one as a treasure
To bring me. Yuietide. 'cheer.
I think of each one as a gift,
And really this is true;
For they bring the gift of friend-
ship
:o last the whole year through,
