ARE YOU DOING ',ENOUGH?
Wky• do children swallow- drain
cleansers,,furniture polish or large
doses of medicines? The key is in
the first line CHILDREN, and
every year hundreds die from ac-
cidental ingestions of common
household products.
There's even a preference break-
down according to age. Very young
children towards cleaning fluids,
furniure polish ,and other non-
food products. The vile taste is
no deterrent. Children aged 4 or
5 tend to be more selective, in-
gesting, medicines, particularly
aspirin, and more particularly,
children's. flavoured aspirin.
normal cleaning products re-
TVs really no wonder that a child
is attracted to the poisonous con-
tainer of a household. Many
normal cleaning products resemble
beverage containers, have a def-
inite fruit-flavor scent, with con_
tents similar in appearance to
milk, apple juice and even straw-
berry soda. And medicines, with
their fabulous array of colors and
shapes could easily have some
semblance to the contents of a
box of Smarties in the eyes of a
child.
The Ontario Safety League
urges you to take a long, hard
look at the potential poising
agents in your home. If you keep
them high up and seemingly out
Of reach, you may not be doing
enough. The innovative climber
won't be satisfied until he reach-
es that top shelf. The, only really
safe place for pills and cleaners
is under lock and key.
SWINE SURVEY
STUDIES PARASITES
A survey of the incidents of
internal swine parasites in •east-
ern Ontario is about to gati'..under
way.
Dr. G.' C. Fisher, head of the
Kempville Veterinary Services
Labatory, says the survey is dn,
igned as a practical aid for pro,:
dncers. The aim is to increase
profits for the farmers by minim-
izing diseases. Although similar.
surveys have been 'carried out
throughout the province, -this . is
the first for eastern Ontario....
A team approach, involving
agricultural representatives, in-
dustry reperesentatives and farm-
ers, as well as the Kemptville
staff, will be involved in the sur-
vey. I will cover five swine herds
in each of the 11 counties of
eastern Ontario. Twelve fecal
samples will be taken from each.
herd and analyzed at the Kempt-
vIlle Labatory. Sows, weaners and
growing pigs will be included in
the survey.
By examining the swine popu-
lation of eastern Ontario, Dr.
Fisher hopes to come up with
practical answers directly applic-
able to the particular conditions
of the region. He expects results
to be available by December of
this year.
