FARM ACCIDENT STATISTIC
CAUSE FOR CONCERN
"Concern for farm safety'
lagged behind industrial
concerns in most countries of the
world," says Hal Wright, Farm
Safety Specialist with the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and,
Food.
Speaking at . the 47th annual]
meeting of the American Society
of Agricultural Engineers, North
Atlantic Region, held recently at
the University of Guelph, Mr.
Wright pointed out that in 1960
the death rate due to farm ac-
cidents was 27 per 100,000 farm
population. this ,figure was ar•
rived at. as a result of a compre•
hensive survey carried out by the
departments to see where farm
accidents occur, The motor
vehicle death rate was 26 per
100,0000. "Since we all agree our
highway fatalities are too high,
we must concede, that our farm
accident rate is also too high,"
said Mr. Wright.
One way 'to reduce farm fatal-
ities is to introduce safety legis-
lation, suggested Mr. Wright.
"However, it appears that re-
strictive measures alone do not
reduce the accident rate, The im-
portance of safety legislation is to
provide a more uniform education-
al 'program which can reduce the
number' and severity of farm ac-
cidents."
As an example of such legis
lation, M.r Wright used the
"slow moving vehicle"' sim man-
datory in a number of provinces.
In Ontario. its use has not reduc.
ed car-tractor ,adoldents. It has,
however, reduced the severity of
these accidents. Each year, there
are approximately 275 ear-tractor
accidents, causing $200,000 in
-property damage. But, fatalities
have declined. There were 10 in
1967. 5 in 1968, and 1 in 1969. This
indicates, said Mr. Wright, that
the slow moving vehiele sign
identifies a farm vehicle, from a
,greater distance, enabling the
motorist to reduce his speed.
OFA NEWS
OFA President Gordon Hill said
"the proposed inquiry into the.
Ontario egg industry is perhaps
the best way to eliminate the
emotion generated in recent
weeks and clear up confusion
among egg producers,"
}Id was referring to the recom-
mendation of the Farm Products,
Marketing Board to the Minister
of Agriculture and Food, the Hon.
William Stewart, that an inquiry
into the Ontario egg industry
should be held.
