The Brussels Post, 1971-10-07, Page 1$3.00 A Year in Advance — $4.00 to U.S.A. -- Single Copy 10c BRUSSELS POST', THU4S.DAY, OCT. 7th, 1971 POST PIJI4ISHING HOUSE Miss Nancy Pearson Feted Prior To 'Marriage Miss Nancy Pearson, bride- elect, has been honored at several showers prior to her marriage to Robert Procter on October Atli, Mrs. George Pearson and Mrs., Alex 'Pearson were co-hostesses • on September 18th at the home of Mrs. George Pearson, of Bridal luncheon at which close relatives of the bride attended, Miss Penny Lowe was hostess on September 25th, in her home, at a miscellaneous shower at which g-irl friends and fellow classmates were. present. A. large number of friends and relatives gathered on Friday even- ing, October 1st, in the United Church basement, Brussels. for a miscellaneous shower. Upon en- tering each lady signed her name on a white tablecloth with liquid embroidery. This cloth was given to Nancy by Mrs. Jane Hall as a souvenir. The basement of the church was beautifully decorated in pink and white. A short program followed at which Mrs. Jack Bryans played the piano, Misses. Julie Valiance and Joan Elliott played the guitar and sang two numbers. Mrs, Aileen Mutter gave a very hum- orous reading. Nancy was then presented with many useful and beautiful gifts after which she expressed her sincere appreciation for the gifts and for everything which had been done for her. A very tasty lunch was served and brought this enjoyable even- ing to a close. MRS. LEO GAYNOR Mrs. Leo G'ayilor, a former Brussels resident, died in Our Lady of Mercy Hospital, Toronto, after a lengthy Hitless. She was in her 79th year. The former Agatha MacDonald, she was born in Chicago, Illinois. and came to Canada in 1924. Her husband, Leo 'Gaynor predeceased her in 1965. She had' been, a member of the St Ambrose Altar Society. She is survived by four daught- ers Mrs. P. - (Mary) Gabourie,, Peterborough; Mrs. W. (Patricia) Barrett, Toronto; Mrs. A. (Janet) Findlay, Toronto; Mts. 13, (Mon- ica) Salter, St. Catharines. Also surviving are' 18 grandchildren, arid one sister Mrs. Jas. (Monica) Carter, Oak Park, Ill. The body. rested at the M. L. Watts Funeral Home in Brussels until MondaYamorning, then to St. Ambrose R.C. Church, Brussels, for Requiem Mass at 10 a,m, with Father Kaminski conducting the service. `Butial was in St. James. Keith Stokes officiated, The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. ThoMas A.Finch of R,R, 1, Ethel and the groom is the son' of Mr. Francis McLellan and the late Mrs. IVIcLellan of Port Stan- ley. • Traditional 'wedding music was played 'by Mrs, Sharon' Stephen- son who else accompanied the soloist, Mr, Robert Cunningham who sang "Wedding Prayer" and "O Perfect Love" The bride, given in marriage by her father, was gowned in satin featuring floor-length skirt fall ing softly from bodice, lowa roned: neckline and long tightly cuffed sleeves. Her floor length veil was held by a Crystal and pearl tiara. Her wedding flowers Were blue carnations, Mrs, Wm, Henderson, Matron of Honor, sister of the bride. Miss Beverley 'Finch, Mrs. , Gordon Finch, Mrs. Fred .Kiser and Miss Olivia McLellan and the flower girl, Melanie Jordon, niece of the groom wore blue peas de sole styled with lantern sleeves gather- at the. „WK.% !!heir hair , was. adorn- ed with blue pornpom$ 'find' they' carried blue shasta daisies. At the reception in the church hall the bride's mother received guests wearing a costive polyester coat and dress ensemble, She was assisted by Mae. Eva McLellan, „aunt of the groom, in a purple suit. For it wedding trip to Kentucky, the bride donned a two-piece navy blue wool suit with navy ac cessories and a, corsage of white roses. The couple will reside at R.R. 8, London. Out of town guests attended front Hamilten, Stoney Creek, Burlington. Ancaster, London, {Belmont, BeechVille, Beaconsfield Queb., Monkton and Fort Stanley. Title Again The 1Vinghorn Ladies topped off a must auecessful season when they downed Brucefield 8-4 to Win the best of seven.•series 4 games to. 3 and captured the W,O.A.A, championship, Wingham was flying high TueS, clay night and they broke loose in the first inning with Gail Me, Pherson. and Joyce Taylor being driven home by Bonnie Bougles's •dounle. Bonnie scored on a 'Bruce-. field error. A single by Marjorie. Eadie and a walk to Doris Coultes proved to be successful as Mary De Bruyn hit one 'of her fantastic home runs. The score at the end of the first inning was Tile next two innings remain- ed scoreless but Joyce Taylor stealing bases scored in the fourth inning making the count 7 - 0. In the sixth inning Gail Mc- Pherson scored because of single hits and errors giving Wing- ham an 8-0 lead. Wingha m wa s threatened in the seventh inning when the first batter was walked and scored be- cause of a Wingham error. Wing- ham recovered by keeping the eighth inning scoreless T?,rucefield, detremined not to be beaten, bounced back in the :ninth inning by scoring three runs making the final score 8-4. -The entire series was a see- saw right from the first game. Both teams played with determin- ation and full of enthusiasm. Each game was full of suspense right from the first batter to the very last one with some games being won in the ninth inning. The two teams provided excel- lent entertainment and kept the many faithful fans sitting on the edge of their seats, Wingham team wines to thank the manager,. PEOPLE .WE KNOW, • Mr.•and-.Mrs. Carl Gowing were honored on the occasion of their 30th wedding anniversary when relatives held a surprise party for them at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Wheeler. Relatives Were present from Ottawa, Tiver- ton. Lucan and Blyth. A pleasant social time was spent and the anniversary couple were ,present- With gifts. Parker will be, retiring from active service with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Com- merce on October 22nd, 1971 after 43 years. .He joined the Bank in London, Ontario in 1928. He has been Manager of the local Branch since March 1900. His successor is to be Mr. R. M, Hyde from Minden, Ont., who is expected to arrive in :Brussels around October .18th. Mr. Parker's many friends and business associates will miss his presence at the bank and wish him many years of pleasant retir- tirement. BRUSSELS U.C.W. AND GUESTS HEAR SPEAKER The C'eneral Meeting of the Brussels U.C.W. met on Tuesday, September 21, with a good attend ante. Visitors were present from Walton, myth and Belgrave, The program committee took charge of the WqrShip Service. Mrs. LeDrew had the theme and opening prayer. Hymn 356 was sung. Scripture taken- from St. Matthew, chapter 12. was read by Mrs.—Thomas, and::. the, summary wa s read by Miss Lucas. Pauline McCutcheon favoured the group with a solo "I Believe", 'Mra. LeDrew closed the Wor- ship with prayer. The president, Mrs. Elsi-a,' Miller, took, the chair. She wel- cOmed the guests and called on Mrs. Hemingway 'to introduce the guest speaker, Mrs. Miner, the president of Hfi.ron-Perth C.W. Mrs. Miner took a s her, Topic "Widening Our Horizons" in this era. of change in everyday liVing, style, home life and worship. Following the business the meeting closed with the Bene diction. BROWNIE AND GUIDE LOCAL AUXILIARY MEET The local auxiliary of mothers of Brownies and Guides met on September 26th, for their firSt meeting for the 1971.72 season. The president, Barbera Watts, niggled the meeting by welcoming the eight ladies present to her home.
