firew-era aoroSs the province . , . have just started giving ofie cent
for each can returned. BreWers
Retail ,in Toronto reported 22,600
cans returned the first week.
That's only 5% of the 50,000
dozen or so cans sold each week,
but its a start.
'Tut the soft drink people
don't seem to care" said Jack
Stafford, President of Huron
etinty Federation of Agriculture.
"'If breWing industry can offer
compensaiioii fa returned beer
bottles and now beer dans, I see
uo reason why the soft df-ink
manufacturers shouldn't too."
"The brewers give a two cent
'• rebate- on --returned •bottles," he
continued "and the result? They
ket ne% of their bottles back."
Murray Criunt M.P.P., who
twice introduced bills to ban non-
returnable bottles said "The
brewers have shown a little more
concern than the soft drink mann-
facturers, altrough the soft drink
people are begliming to move
noW."
Ontario's new enviromental pro-
tection. act gives the government
authority to ban the Sale of non-
returnable bottles,
"And when the government
does that — as it will if the soft
drink peonle don't do it them-

people of Ontario can look for-

Lion in the dairy industry," said
Mr, Miller. "We have tried to
talk to gOvernment agencies and
the dairy corporations, At first
Kraft wouldn't even return our
telephone calls. When we picket-
ed their plant at 'Ingleside, the
Ontario Milk Marketing Board
performed the role of strike
breaker for Kraft. Following the
picketing action at Ingleside we
again tfied to meet with Krafts,
but were Jurned down."
"There is no way farmers can
carry on this present situation."
the vice president said, with the
multi-national dairy corppfations
establishing the price and tharket-
ing conditions and having their
position backed up by the govern-
ment controlled Milk Marketing
Board, the farmers will alwaYS
come out on the short end. We
are determined to establish a
recognized bargaining position
which will result in. the isTva
negotiating price and marketing
arrangements on behalf of farm-

Perform a brokerage function."
"Make no mistake about it, this
