Minister Thomas. Wells said this
week he plans to send special in-
vestigation teams through the
Prevince to uncover frauds by
welfare recipients and welfare
workers.
This is the third move announc-
ed by Mr. Wells during the past,
five weeks to tighten welfare
practices in the Province.' In late
May he gave the municipalities
the power to refuse welfare to
teenagers under 18 whose parents
are willing to support them in a
home setting. In early June, he
said able .bodied single men
receiving welfare must be willing
to accept jobs anywhere in the
Province.
The Provincial Government will
spend 4.5 million over the next
thsree years to establish detoxi-
fication centres for chronic
drunks i n 11 counties across
Ontario.
Police *ill be Permitted to take
a drunk to a. detoxification centre
without laying a charge. This is
the first step of a programme
designed to eliminate drunken-
ness as an offence and to insti-
tute a programme Of rehabil
Ration for the Province's 125,000
alcoholics.
