The great majority of accidents including farm accidents are caused by unsafe individual acts," J. C. Thackery, President of the Canada Safety Council, said in his campaign message. "Disregard of common Sense safety practices causes far too Many deaths and injuries on the farm. Often the victims are young children. "Despite the pressure to 'make hay while the sun shines ,' there is no need to sacrifice safety in the name of speed," he said. The Canadian Farm and In- dustriial Equipment Institute is co-sponsoring ,.the campaign which is being given solid support by the agricultural industry. The CSC believes farm safety must start with the creation of positive attitude towards safety. in the home starting with young children. They have to face fast, intensifying traffic on rural high- ways, many recreational hazards and especially farm work area dangers. Studies show fa.mers too often disregard safety instructions for modern machinery and fail to keep their older machines proper- ly maintained. Modern farming requires mod- ern safety practices, the campaign stesses. Farmers must think about the safety consequences of their operations before they • start work and make sure they do what is required to make their farms safer, healthier • places to work, and live. Council requests : support from, the mass media in . reporting the campaign. — Safety Canada PAVEMENT MARKINGS Tci BE CHANGED Honourable Charles MeNaughton Minister of Transportation and Communications, has announced a change in the department's policy regarding pavement lane markings which will go into effect next year to conform with stand- ards being adopted by most prov- inces and States in North Amer- ica. changinf is not allowed, On the 13,000-mile fang's and Secondary Highway system in the province it will take approx. irnately one year to complete the change-over. Painting pavement markings on the provincial highway system costs approximately $1.5-million per year and requires more than 200,000 gallons of paint plus 1,300,000 pounds of minute glass heads to provide reflectorization. -Under the new system of pave. ment markings no additional costs are anticipated. The Department of Transporta- tion and Communications ma.nuel of Uniform Traffic Control is non being revised and it is expected that municipalities throughout the province will change their pavement markings to conform to the new standard.
