ADULT GUIDANCE NEEDED
FOR YOUNG BIKE RIDERS
There are an estimated 6,000,000
bicycles in Canada and sales, have.
increased 60 per cent the last
five years.
Adult guidance is essential at
the earliest stages of riding to
help the child to understand and
respond to the full implication of
traffic rules and environmental
deficiencies.
It has been found that, a high,
proportion of bicycle riders 4 in-
volved in collisions "attempt to
execute roadway marioetivres
which are contrary to the con-
v.entional movement of motor
vehicle traffic on the roads and
' streets." They appeared to oper-
ate aectirding to their, own set of
rules which clash with those
obeyed automatically by motor,
ists.
It has been emphasized that
young bike riders who cannot
reach their pedals comfortably
when seated run a risk of collision
five times as, great as youngsters
who "fit,'
It ha s been noted that few bike
salesmen; especially in depart-
. ment stores, know enough about
the subject to ensure the bicycles
"fit" the child properly.
There are, ,no quality standards
anywhere for bicycles. Any there
are are set by individual manu-
facturers who, naturally, have no
central over the vast niiirib8rt '
of modifield at home bikes with
such dangerous devices as gros-
sly extended forks.
