The Lucknow games have attained con- tinental celebrity, and with just cause. When the size of the place in which they are held is taken into consideration, the success which has attended the holding of the games is truly marvellous. Fully 8,000 persons were present. DESCRIPT1ON OF LUCKNOW. The village of Lucknow is situated par- tially in each of the three Townships of Ashfield and West Wawanosh in Huron County, and Kinloss in Breve County, We consider ourselves justified in refer- ring to it as a village of Huron County. The pioneer of the place was Eli Stauffer, a German, whom some suppose to have been the first white man who ever crossed the Township of Kinloss, though we do not vouch for the correct - new of this opinion. He purchased that portion of Kinloss on which the larger part of the village is built about the year 1850, and was followed in 1851 by Wal- ter Armstrong, who settled in Wawan- osh just east of the village site, while south-west, north-west, and respectively of whet las grown to be the village Woollei Dods of all gindt, Daniel Webster and family, Wm. All I have to say, Sir Chief, on this point is, if I have been of any service to you, the work has been a tabor of love without the desire of fee Or reward. The mo- tives which actuated me to work for your Society, and the history of the in- terest taken in your games is told in a few words. Six years ago I arrived in Lucknow on business, and seeing the town in holiday attire and large crowds on the streets, I was told that the an- nual games of the Lucknow Caledonian Society had been held that day. In the evening I was waited upon by a deputa- tion inviting me to a supper to be given by the Society, and I availed myself of the kindly offer ; and I was so struck by the kindness and attention displayed to the guests present by the members of your Society that a warm feeling sprang up in my breast, which has increased year by year, until I have to ask myself at the present time if I am a Scotehmai or not. Your reference to the fraternal feeling between the two great Celtic races, the Scotch and Irish, gives me great pleasure, and I am glad if I have assist- ed in producing that good feeling. But " allow me, dear sir, to say that the great liberality displayed by .. you and your members, on all occasions, and at every opportunity, has done much to cement that feeling whioh should characterize our Canadian people. A union of races irrespective of creed or nationality, with but one view in mind, and that the building up of our grand Dominion into a vest and prosperous empire.
