COLD WATER FISHERMEN SHOULD TAKE PRECAUTIONS Fishermen now have their boats in the water and wetting-a line for the first tittle this season. The greatest hazard these „early fisher- men face is the ehance of falling into deadly cold water, The Ontario Safety -League states that anyone using a, boat on cold water should take the erecaution of Wearing protectiVe clothing and some type of flotation device. The worst thing a person can do if there is any likehtiod : of having to survive in cold water is to wear light cloth- ing. The average fisherman's clothes worn during the early spring months, usually warm. underclothing and comparatively Windpkoof and waterproof outer garments' can easily be made into tin excellent cold-water sur- vival suit. A parka-type hood is ideal for proteoting the head and back of the neck which is patta cularly susceptible to &lid. 'Pant legs tucked into high-cut laced boots, witalproof knitted wrists and a scarf that can be tightly wound around the throat are all ideal fur cold-water survival as they cut off circulation of water claim outside the clothing. The trapped water that has seeped through to the skill wormy to body temperature arid becomes ad additional insulator. This is the principle of th e wet suit as used by scuba divers, Mid mast tra- portm securely fasten a Me, jacket over this clothing and you have a survival suit that will keep yam, afloat and active for sufficient time to attempt an escape from the cold water it your hoot should capsize. Ontario Safety League Research indicates that it i5 vital to get out of the cold water end find shelter and heat. There are few instances of survival where victims tenlained with all over. turned boat for any length of time during cold-water seasons. A man overboard under tease conditions, is in a terrible cinema; he must get out of the. killing cold in order O save his life, but he has the problem of reaching sh ore safely before the cold saps his energy. Early fisnermen using light boats during the cold-water season are warned to keep seated al all times while on open water, watch - out for sudden spring storms. .and wear seine adequate type of flotation device at all times. -Seargeant: "So, you are cem- plainitig of finding sand in your Soup." • Private: "That's right. sArge.-• Sergeant: "Did you join the Army to serve your country or to. oomplain about foo?d" • Private: "I joined. the Army to ;iervf, my, country, not eat ELMA FARMERS' MUTUAL FIRE INSURANCE COMPANY Now serving you with all major coverages on Farm, Urban and Cottages.
