1971 SPRING CAR CHECK.
CAMPAIGN — MAIN
MALPUNCTIONS
Well over half of all cars in4
spected in provincial compulsory
and voluntary motor vehicle in-
spections are rejected because of
malfunctions,
A Canada Safety Council surVey
prepared for its Spring Car Check
campaign shows that more than
1,725,000 ont of the preliminary
motor vehicle registration figure
of 8,250;000 underwent sonic kind
of inspection in 1969, the last year
for which statistics are available.
Faulty headlights are the :Main
reason for rejection in most juris-
dictions. This malfunction can be
most dangerous not only by re-
clueing the driver's area of per,
eeption but also by misleading
other drivers.
Faulty brakes were also high on
the list. What is disturbing is that
drivers can generally detect these
malfunctions by spongy handling
characteristics but too many don't
got theist fixed.
Steering defects accounted for
Many other rejections. Here again
inspectors report a large number
of people who blithely Carry - on
although they know the steering
is poor because it is loose.
Obviously detective tires
many say the inspections of the
ear's only contacts with the road
are not sufficiently rigorous
accounted for the rejection et
litany other vehicles,:
The vehicle owner could oh-
*viously have spotted tire mal-
funetions just by looking at them
for excessive wear; breaks and
deep MA'S,
Another cominon catisc. of re-
jection was an inadequate ex-
haust system. Not only does this
increase sharply the possibility
of deadly carbon monoxide seep
age but it also impedes the
functioning of einission devices
designed to cut down pollution.
A more coniplicated cause for
rejection Was poor' alignment.
In a Mere intensive survey car-
ried out recently, poor alignment
was detected in a large majority
of the cars tested. Alignment
should be clinched by at competent

mechanical condition of his vehicle
as these results demonstrate so
vividly, Such an attitude would
merely mean the driver would
anake an effort to get his vehicle
fixed as inspection time rolls
around, rather than ensuring that
the car is kept in good operating
condition all year round.
