The time to prevent -a skid is
before it happens. The way to:
prevent a skid is usually to avoid
extremes -- of speed, acceler-
ation and braking. When traction
is poor, drive more slowly and
treat both gas pedal and brake
pedal more gently, the Ontario
Safety League counsels.
Most drivers know how to cor-
rect a rear wheel skid — turn the
steering wheel in the direction the
rear wheels are sliding'. But, not
enough realize that, a. corrected
skid usually developes in another
skid in the other direction. The
second "pendtilum" skid is likely
to he less severe than the first;
but it. can still be dangerous, es-
pecially if the driver isn't exper-
ienced enough to expect, it,
