WATCH FOR RABIES
IN SKUNKS, FOXES
A two-year old boy in Ontario
County and a 20-menth old Scar-
borough ,girl were bitten by rabid
skunks last November. Winter not
only brings snow but also rabies,:
and, cases in skunks and foxes,
two major carriers, greatly
creases -during the Cold,Season,
Last year's figure for the
York' County Toronto areas show
siguifieant' increases over 1969,
particularly inhvlving the inci-
dence: of rabies in skunks, skunk
tabieS haVing nearly tripled over
the seine period in 1967. There is
;a temuorary prevalence of skunk
rabies in the east Scarborough
West Hill area Which shows that
the disease is not confined to
rural area. The department of
lauds and forests anticipated
there would he •au .increase in
skunk rabies in parts of OntatiO
because of the high skunk repro-
ductive rate during. the summer of
1970.
This tune of year, watch for
'strange' behaviour in 'wildlife.
Ilewaue skainks seen during the
day or wandering into your yard.
Rabid skunks and foxes may aP-
pear friendly or extremely aggreS-
!Ave. YOung children sheuid be
warned not to bunch any strange
acting animals, especially foxes
or skunks. Check out any reports
by your children about the new
`kitty' or 'doggy' in the 'yard. Re-
menthera rabid animal's b ite can
cause illness, and even death! If
you have reason to believe an an
final

,is infected call the nearest
office of the Canada. dppartment
of agriculture or the Ontario de.,
Partment of lands and forests for
further directions.
If you live in an area Where
hunting is not restricted, enemy-
age hunters to hunt fo3cp§ !au your
property, especially it you. are
aware of a largo fox population.
.Adequate harvest of fox popul-
ations.iowers the incidence of con-
tact and, consequently, the rabies
problem is. siginificantly reduced,
FORTIFIED FOODS 'NEEDED
FOR BETTER NUTRITION
Man feeds his animals better
than he feeds himself.
In ar recent address at the
Terence on Changing Concepts in
Agrwturp and Food, Prof. J, C.
Alexander, Department of Nu-
trition, University of :Guelph, said
that cattlemen, poultry men, pet
owners, and others who care for
animals -insist on giving them
adequate and balanced rations.
But. human food fortification pro-
grams are inadennate, he said,
and have gradually declined in
recent years.
Prof, Alexander said that nutri-
fication of several foods is need-
ed, and that should not be a volun-
tary process. Very little bread is
enriched, much milk contains
little or no vitamin A or 1), and
salt may or may not be loidzed.
Most people don't. know the dif-
ference, and a slight r eduction in
price will entice them to buy the
non-nutrified product.
:Most people regard mainntrition
as prevalent only in Underde-
veloped countries, but Prof.
Alexander cited a survey
which showed that in 711,000 low•
income individuals in 10 states
every kind of malutritionn that
had seen in similar studies in
Central America, Africa, and
ASia was encountered.
As a Partial solution to the
problem, Prof. Alexander suggests
the marketing of food prduas
ilar to those marketed to develop-
ing countries. Such food Products,
containing a relatively complete
list of essential nutrients, are
used to supplement the diets of
groups such as preschool children
and pregnant and nursing moth-
ers.
