NEWS FROM THE
ONTARIO FEDERATION
OF AGRICULTURE
Mailmen began delivery of $20
million Of -cheques to Ontario
farmers last week.
The cheques result from the
October 6th, 1.970.:. announcement
by the Ontario government of a
Farm. Tax. Reduction PrograM,
designed to reduce the burden of
municipal and education taxes on
farm property. Each farmer will
receive a cheque equal to 25 per
cent of his net propeity taxes.
The government announcement
of the rebate came after a sum-
mer-long campaign by the Ontarie
Federation of Agriculture for the
removal of education' taxes from
property. The rebate is a,pproxim,
a.tely equal to 50 per cent of the
education taxes paid by farmers.
Hundreds of farmers across
Ontario withheld the education
portion. of their property
during the campaign. to protest
what they called the unjust and
inequable taxation of farm prop-
erty.
Said Ontario .rederation of
culture President at the time of
the, government a ithouticem eto:
"this is a triuMPh for farmers
and their organi&itions. There is
no doubt: that the government
would not have granted farmers
this r ebate if they hadn't prodded
the g;overninerit into action."
Following the rebate offer. OFA
called off its tax-withholdhig
activitieS for a "wait-and-see"
period. The farmers' organization

"THINK SNOW --
STAMP OUT SUMMER!"
This slogan will make many
people who live in Ontario sht-
der, but for the half million odd
snowmobile enthusiasts this was
a sincere wish. Some call it snow
madness, but for those who en-
joy snowmobiling or benefit from.
its economi c impact, it is SNOW
that starts some 140,000 snowmo•
biles zooming over the Ontario
landscape and that. is what they
want.
-Whatever snowinobiong rn ea.ns
to you, another season is upon us
and the Ontario 'Safety League
advises everyone involved to get
with it and make it a good one.
The Ontario Provincial Govern.
Ment has revised regulations with;
in the, Motorized Snow 'Vehicle
Act to ftirther restrict indiscrim-
inate use of public thoroughfares
by snowmobile operators
governments have
been given wider powers of
control within their juris-
diction.
It is now mandatory for the
operator of a snowmobile on
any public thoroughfare to
possess a valid motor vehicle
operator's licence,
These are changes which the
Ontario Safety League have
strongly recommended. It is :the,
Loam:les hope that the result
Will be a reduction in the number
of snowmobile accidents and
fatalities occurring on public
thoronghfarea.
The Ontario Safety League
commends the snowmobile clubs
in Ontario for the work they have
done to make snowmobiling a sat-
erand better recreation. The Ont-
ario Federatioa of Snowmobile
Clubs has alSo contributed great-
ly in this effort through their
strong leadership. It is the Lea-
gue's considered opinion that
Snowinobile problems in a .com-
nlitnity diminish whenever a
Snowinobile chilli' is formed with
reSpOnStble leadershin. Operator
