RD Status:
Respiratory diseases such as
chronic bronchitis and emphy-
sema are increasing to almost
epidemic proportions in Canada
The number of deaths from
these diseases has quadrupled
in the past 20 years. It is estim-
ated that 1,000,000 persons in
Canada today have emphysema
and chronic bronchitis although
only one quarter of these would
admit to the symptoms. Surveys
have shown that between 15
and 20% of the adult popu-
lation have evidence of air-
way obstruction.
The Canadian taxpayer pays, at
least, $20,000,000 for Chronic
Respiratory Diseases every
year.
Ontarians are the kind of people who wouldn't be
here if there was any place better. We are people
who came from a hundred lands and stayed to build.
People with backbone and brawn and a hunger to
succeed. Men and women who've created a stan-
dard of living in decades that other lands worked
centuries to build. If we have a flaw it's our chronic
modesty. Ontarians may be proud to be Ontarians
and Canadians . . . they just seldom tell anyone.
From an economic point of view that's wrong. The
more people we have boosting Ontario and
Canada the better it is. And we've got a lot to
boost with. At a time when the dollar is having
many demands made on it, Ontarians can note that
provincial taxes have held the line in 1970. And
we had a surplus to boot. Yet, needed programs
have not been neglected. The Ontario Housing
Corporation for example, has housed 120,000
people to date and Currently has almost a billion
dollars worth of programs active in nearly 200
Ontario Communities. We need a vigorous
economy of course, to support these important
programs. And, that's where you come in. Though
our productivity has doubled in ten years and our
incomes in twelve, Ontarians don't sit on their
successes. There's a demanding decade ahead full
of challenges and opportunities to make the quality
of our lives better yet. To meet these challenges
we've got to believe in ourselves. Which, when
you think about it, isn't such a bad idea.

TIRE MIXING •
The Canada Safety Couicil
Warns motorists of the danger of
mixing ddiffereat types of tires.
This affects snow tires Which
many Motorists are buying zte
the winter season approaches.
The danger of intermixing has
thereaSed sharply heeause of the
large number Of different nevi
tire types and sizes.
The tires should not be Milted
-because they differ greatly in per-
formance When stipperting
liar loads, in' their side slippage
and even in braking, Because of
these differences, the vehicle's
handling characteristics may be
seriously affected by hiterniixing
the tires.
The Canada Safety Council
advises motorists to follow the
recommendations In the Owner's
Manual or of reputable tire deal-
ers. :Now tires should be mounted
on the rear for better traction and
handling and should be broken in
by limiting speed to 60' Itiph for
the first 450 mites,
Vcir the highest, degree of safety
fit all four wheels with the sl'me
'type of tire - - bias, belted-bias
or radial ply This applies to
snow tires - - if your regular Om;
are bias, fit bias snow ties en the
rear wheels,
It is exceptionally dangerow; .
inter mix bias, belted-bias or
radial tires or the new "60" son,
ies tires with, other tire sizes or
types. They should be used in
complete sets.
The radial Of 'IA t4--triAm" tiri .4
should not be applied to any Ve+
hide unless they Aro approvgd, by
the tire or vehicle manufacturer.
Car owners who insist on tak-
ing a. chance by intermixing tires
should, at 'least ensure that tires
of the same type are mounted on
wheels on the Same axle. the
Canada Safety Council -says.
