"WELL DOESN'T
EVERYBODY COUGH?"
Chronic bronchitis, one of the
fastest-growing diseases in Can-
ada. today talt•es• most of its vict-
ims completely by surprise.
Characterized by chronic cough,
bronchitis begins with what most
People shrug off as smoker's
cough'.
The Canadian ToSerculiosis and
Respiratory Disease Association
has become increasingly alarmed
in recent years over the sudden
increase of chronic bronchitis in
this country. Last year 1,416.
anacliails died of this disease,
which is an increase of almost
00 more than in 196S. More alarm-
ing :than the deaths. however, is
the inreased prevelence of chronic
bronchitis and its resulting toll
of economicc and social hardship.
Chronic bronchitis is an in-
flamation of the bronchi. This re-
sults in a narrowing of the air-
ways •so that the person with
obstrucive bronchitis has aifficulr
ty getting air into his lungs, and
even more difficulty moving air
out of the lungs. The cause of
this inflamation of the bronchial
tubes is some irritant, most com-
monly - cigarette smoke. Cough is
the most common and in
chronic bronchitis tends to
occur more frequently in the
morning and to last longer than
usual if a chest cold develones,
Although cough is the most
common symptom, the. most de-
cisive indication of repiratory
nisease is sputum. The.. presence
of chronic cough and sputum on
most days of the year for at least
three months, during at least two
consecutive years, results in a
clinical diagnosis of .chronic bron-
chitis. Other symptoms of more
advanced bronchitis are wheez-
ing and breathlessness.
Although chronic bronchitis
can 'be cured in its early stages,
almost one third of all cases are
diagnosed only when the per-
son becomes sick enough to enter
hospital. By this time the patient
probably has serious and perman•
ent disability.
Through the use of Christmas
Seal funds, the Canadian Tubercu-
losis and ResPiratory Disease .
Association and it's provincial
associations have focussed their
attention on the prevention, early
detection, treatment and rehab-
ilitation of chronic bronchitis. Be,.
sides disabling thousands of Can-
adians, chronic bronchitis has a
serious effect on the country's
econmy and must be reeopied...
as one a the most serious diseaii-
es today.
