PIGS GET ULCERS TOO
Gastric ulcers are becoming
more widespread in swine,
Thirty percent of swine passing
through • some slaughterholiSes
have ulcers, says Dr. C. K. Roe,
Departnient of Clinical Studies,
Ontario Veterinary College.
"Most Of the time the pigs
don't show airy, obvious Signs",
explains Dr. Itoe. "When the
trouble develops, the Ulcer' May
bleed aml the pig beeelnes anemic
and evidence of bleed. shows up in
the fecal material ."
'Gastric ulcers affect both the
appetite and growth of a pig.. The
location of the ulcer is differeet
.from that'usually seen in humans.'"''
It is' sitdated ie the • esophageal

Why swine develdp ulcers iS7
not exactly known. Dr. Roe sug-
gests that it may be related to

close quarters With. poor ‘,enti-
lation.
Some researchers tel that
Vitamin E and, or, seleilitite cte
ficiency is part Of the cause, Too
finely ground feed may also, be a
contributing factor. .Dr. Roe
points mit that if pigs are fed
coarse feed they chew more, re:•

Researchers at the college are
trying to study how the fineness
of grind affects the development
of ulcers, The grind may bp re-
lated to the fibrous part of the
feed. Oat hulls and sawdust have
been used experimentally in the
feed as a protective - device with.
some success. "The Question is,
asks Dr.Roe, "can it be econ-
omically useful?"
Spine feeding experiments, in-
volve :10-30 pigs fed diets calcu-
lated to produe gastric ulcers.
Indiyidual pigs have had plastic
tubes "placed— '-in the abdominl
Wall and stomach wall so that the
area •of the stomach ,, where the
uteer occurs Ray be seen and
studied. ...A „ ,gattre-eaniera
introduced into the stomach so
that pictures of the stomach wall
can be • taken and examined.
Ober research workers have
found that heat-treated corn
contributes to 'uleere pigs
Whereas those fed. raw corn
showed no incidence of gastric
ulcers.
