SILAGE GAS DANGERS
CALL FOR PRECAUTIONS
Mr. Hal Wright, Farm Safety
SPecialiSt, ()tart() Department on'
Agriculture and Food, identifies
the gases as nitrous oxide and
ni.tricoxicle which are especially
dangerous since they are color-
less and odorless. Once mixed
with air they take: on a yellowish
broWn tinge.
The gases begin to form hours
after the silage has been stored,
and collect at silage level, as they
are heavier than air. Running the
silage blower will meanly agitate
the gases. failing to eliminate
the danger,
To remove the gases a number

DOCTORS TO WAGE
CAMPAIGN FOR
GREATER SEATBELT USE
RX for Safety: Wear a seatbelt
at all times when driving a car„
Don't be surprised if your
family doctor gives you this,
safety prescription along with his
regular medical advice next Onto
you pay him a visit.
Last June 15.18, 1400 doctors
from across Canada congregated
in Winnipeg for the annual :ileet-
ig the Canadian medical ABSOC-
lation. One of the items on their
agenda dealt. with seatbelts and
their use both by the public and
members of the profession.
In recognition of the great safe-
ty value of seatbelts, the doctors
passed a motion requesting legis-
lation which would reqUire seat-
belt use, by law, in all vehicles
on the road. They approved a
broad educational program on
seatbelt use for members of the
profession and their families. And
they pointed out to those attend-
ing the conference that not wear-
ing your seatbelt can be costly in
terms of money as well as health
. as illustrated by recent
Court decisiOns whict reduced the
Sett:len-101AS made tO persons in-
Wed in ear collisions because
they were not wearing seat beltS.
These legal precedents, say the
doctors are warnings to motor-
ists that they have a legal and
financial responsibility, as well
as a moral responsibility, to take
safety precautions both as, pas-
songets, anddrivers in cars,
The C.M,A.' is also suggesting
that along with medical advice,
