FARM SAFETY WEEK
Over 1,300 farm resident
die this :year from accidents on
the farm._ For this reason the
Canada Safety Council is sponsor-
ing a Farm Safety Week from
July 24 to 31 to promote the idea
of safety and caution in the rural
areas.
Mr. Hal 'Wright, Farm Safety
Specialist for Ontario, points to
tractors and fires as the largest
contributore to farm deaths, with
misuse of chemicals end serious
'falls running second.
The tractor is vital to all farm
operations but a recent study by
the Royal Commission on Agri-
culture showed that 78% of farm
machinery fatalities involved
tractors, Farm equipment acci-
dents in general have been he-lin-
ed on fatigue and stress on the
part of the operator, intif,th of
-Which could easily have been
avoided. Farm equipment On pub-
lic highways is another source of
rural death. Tractors, for example,
are not designed for highway
travel, and yet one-third of tractor
deaths occur on highways.
Children are the tragic victims
of many farm accidents. An estim-
ated 20% of all fatalities involv-
ing farm machinery is made 'up
of children under the age of ten.
A constant surveillance of the
whereabouts and activities of
Children is a reliable method of
reducing such Liceitlent.
Fires take their share of human
life. Defective chimneys, unsafe
stoves and fureaces, imProPer nee
of electricity and gasoline, have
caused numerous serious fires
and contributed to the growing
statistics of farm deaths. Again
children head the list of victims,
In the final analysis it is the
farmer, says Mr. Wright, who
must keep safety in mind when-
ever and wherever he may be.
The purpose of Farm Safety
Week is to make the farming
population more -aware of the
dangers the farm and urge
a higher degree of care and
caution.
PROTECT YOUR EYES
